Building a sod box?

So I'm thinking I want to build a sort of sod box for my balcony so that Hudson can go out the sliding door and use the restroom. Has anyone built one of these? I'm thinking either a wood or plastic tray/box, but not sure which. Then a layer of possibly plastic sheeting, potting soil, and sod. But really I have no idea what I'm doing!

Please advise! Thank you!

Hmmm. Would you mow it? Lol.

Haha I'm assuming it would die before it got too rowdy and I would replace the piece. Since he'd be peeing on it I would think it would turn into sad yellow grass?

I do know that there's a company that ships you a new sod puppy patch once a month. I think someone has mentioned it here.

Never built one, but it might work. Let us know how it goes.

I'm thinking I want one that's bigger, plus I'd prefer to just replace the sod which is muuuuuch cheaper haha.

After some googling I think that I have my plan of action figured out. I'll keep y'all updated on if it works or not!

Yep i just have my first doggie lawn patch for the last week. She uses it pretty well, so I like that. Also not having to replace pee pads all the time. But it's not cheap. I'm in an apt on the 18th floor, so outside isn't an option, esp at 11 weeks. I get it twice a month, about $25 each time. I'd love to see a pic of the final solution! Karla

Same here in the apartment. It's also so hot here that I feel bad taking him down the stairs and marching him around. Would rather have our sliding glass door open and he could go out onto the balcony and straight back into the AC!

This dog is expensive enough as is haha so when I found out that local sod here is $3/square foot I couldn't justify one of the subscription things. It'll be this week's project!

I built it today. Hudson has already taken to it! I am loving it so far, and it cost a grand total of $30 to make! The sod will need to be replaced periodically but that's only $3. I am very pleased with it!

I also got him a dog pool, which is on our balcony next to the grass box. I can't get him out of the dang thing haha.

After everything was purchased and brought home it took me about 10 minutes to assemble the whole thing from start to finish.

Haha thank you! Although now he seems to want to lounge on it... Hasn't left it literally since he got it. I am nervous he won't want to use it as a restroom since he likes it so much. Might have to build another one.

What a great idea. I am sure it will turn yellow soon, but at that price, you can definitely afford to replace the sod pieces. I am thinkng you may definitely need a second one.
I am planning to get Pierce a pool this week. Will be interesting to see what he does. Hopefully, it will happen today, if everything else ai have planned doesn't take twice as long as it should.

I'm thinking I need a second one too since he thinks this one is his personal lounge patch. The sod will definitely yellow, especially since it was already in kind of rough shape when I got it, but like you said for $3 that's no big deal!

It took me five stores and a drive to a city over to find that pool! For the life of me I couldn't find a hard plastic pool!

It turned out really great!

Thank you!

Pierces breeder used a pool that size for the pups to play in. I realized this weekend I have not seen very many of them, at least not like I used to. We have an older variety type store that may have one if our Walmart doesn't.

I looked at every store I could think of. Finally broke down and drove to petsmart.

That is a great idea for apartment living! Good job!

Thank you! He seems to be understanding its purpose better today. Although we definitely need a second one for him to lounge on.

I plan on building one if these this weekend. Can I ask what you used
On the bottom? Or is it just the sod. Thanks!!!
