Good afternoon FBN family :) hope all is well.

quick update on chowder, hes doing well adjusting although because this is our first puppy i feel like im doing everything wrong, i think chowder is doing well and having fun. When we leave him @ home hes pretty good in his expen. His giardia is getting much better and hes been on his 2nd round of treatment. This week we drop off stool sample to see if hes in the clear, but fingers crossed i know it can take a while so im trying to be patient and know that these things happen with a puppy :)

Now here is a question that i wanted to ask. Chowder does stay home by him self for 3-4 hours alone at times (someone's gotta pay for his kibbles ;)) so im looking for the right chew toy that will occupy him and keep him entertained and not bored.

We have a bullystick which he likes but i cant keep him on there for more than 5 minutes. Nylabone had this puppy package and had a bacon bone in there, He loved it but after some research the main ingredient in that bone was Wheat so i quickly took it away. we also have deer antlers and elk antlers, but i cant keep him to chew that for more than 50 seconds.

What worked best for you guys? I dont leave the bully stick in his expen when we leave just in case he chokes on it. How can i get chowder to really enjoy his chewtoys and keep him occupied by him self for awhile.

Any help would be awesome. Thank You!

Best advise I can give is to EXCERISE EXCERISE EXCERSE him before you leave then he will SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP while you are gone. A tired puppy is a good puppy! :) My boys are alone for up to 8 hours a day. Now I have 4 dogs so they are never really alone, but I still feel guilty because I can't be with them! You have plenty of great chew options. I would not worry at all you have plenty to keep him busy. I would just spend 10 or 15 mins throwing toys or running him around the house to tire him out so he sleeps while you are gone. Puppies sleep 15-20 hours a day while they are growing. It's likely if he becomes board he will sleep! :)

ahhh thank you julie, i try to keep him up till he cant open his eyes anymore before we go to bed around 10:30-11pm, and when i have to leave in the morning wake up @ 6:30 play with him till around 8:45. its been working good so far.

With the exception of summer, Jax is home alone most of the day as well, confined to the kitchen. I don't leave chew toys with him due to potential choking. I'm pretty sure after whining and barking for a few, he just goes to sleep.

Kongs are usually pretty good and safe. Maple is a big toy destroyer but her two Kongs she just cant destroy. One has been with her since she was a tiny pup and the other one we bought about 2 months ago. Buy a big size and make sure they are the original Kong not some cheap dollar store product :p You can then fill them with peanutbutter or banana or little treats and your little one will be busy for a while. :)

i tried doing the kong thing. Chowder will look @ the kong sniff it and look back at me and give me this "wait this is all you got look..." kind of like this...

Bully sticks are bad, we don't buy them or Raw hides either. We only buy Nylabones or Kongs. They will get bored with pretty much any toy after awhile.

I learned with the Kong to make it easy at first. Also, start with the puppy Kong since it is a little more flexible. They still can't destroy it at this age, but they can work stuff out of it a little easier. Put some kibble in it and fill the opening with just a small amount of banana or peanut butter in the beginning without freezing it. That will help him get the idea of what to do. Once he does, then you can make it a little more difficult and freeze it, which will occupy more time. It took a few tries for Pierce to decide it was a good thing. I made sure he liked banana first, too. Now, he loves it! The small treat balls that they can roll around that will deposit kibble work well too. Something like this

Ollie had a bully stick when I first picked him up. I was like what is that smell coming from the carrier?!?!? I picked it up and OMGosh! The SMELL!!! PPPPPUUUEEWWWW!! Do you all know what those are right?!?!?

While I never could bring myself to buy a “bully stick”–a severed, dehydrated bull’s penis, flavored to be a chew for dogs (it seems so barbaric). For those who do feed them, I thought you’d like to know that there are some issues with them that currently leave your animals at risk.

Bacterial contamination
The researchers further found that 27 percent of the bully sticks were contaminated with Escherichia coli (E. coli), with at least one stick contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant strain. Another stick was contaminated with Clostridium difficile, and another contained the superbug methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).The findings emphasize the need for people to wash their hands after handling any pet treats made from raw meat, the researchers said. Such treats should not be handled by pregnant women, the very young, the elderly or the immunocompromised.
The survey results suggest that many pet owners might not realize that bully sticks and other popular pet treats are made from raw meat.”We were surprised at the clear misconceptions pet owners and veterinarians have with pet foods and many of the popular raw animal-product based pet treats currently on the market,” said Freeman.
“For example, 71 percent of people feeding bully sticks to their pets stated they avoid by-products in pet foods, yet bully sticks are, for all intents and purposes, an animal by-product.”Only 62 percent of veterinarians knew that the sticks are made from a bull’s penis, along with only 44 percent of general respondents.”There’s a lot of misperception out there,” Freeman said. “Owners really need to find out the facts and make their decisions based on those.”
