Does your Frenchie like water?

My dog has same symptoms as Jax, constantly licking her paws and scratching. She was like that when I rescued her a year ago. I do find it's slightly better when she's on a good food for her, and not a whole lot better in winter, so it must not be just environmental for her . I also give her cetirizine (Zyrtec) 15mg per day. She is pretty itchy but hasn't been too sick ie. not a lot of ear infections or hot spots, so I'm trying to hold off on the biologics as long as I can. She did pretty well on Orijen Six Fish, but I'm trying to stay away from fish long term because of ocean contamination. She's doing pretty good on the EasyRaw. She didn't seem to do great on Canisource Grand Cru beef dehydrated raw, which is not grain free, but has white rice, whole barley, and rolled oats which aren't as allergenic as wheat or soy. Canisource has a grain free fish but again, I'm avoiding fish. They said they are coming out with other grain free dehydrated raws by the end of the summer. I like the Grand Cru, which is made in Quebec, because the dehydrated nuggets don't have to be rehydrated, and it's half the price of the next cheapest dehydrated raw here in Canada.

I did the soaks whenever his paws got red. I can say I haven't done a soak in a very, very long time. He was on Apoquel, still licked paws and scratched but nothing like before he was on it. Friday was week 2 of the Cytopoint. He licks his paws here and there but it's been much, much less. Barely any scratching. He is allergic to grass, trees, weeds and shrubs so I don't think there will ever be a "cure" for him, more like maintenance.

Here's a picture of what her paws look like when she's been licking them:

Are you doing the iodine soaks? It can take a a week or two of soaking them before improvement. Some people have luck with ACV soaks but the iodine worked better for Jax. And Jax can be itchy all year round, so it can still be environmental for your girl. I switched Jax to raw and there was some improvement but he will always need something be it Cytopoint or Apoquel or something along those lines. Plus I wipe his pits and paws with a Duoxo wipe every other day and weekly baths rotating between Ketohex and Chlorohexidine shampoo. A lot of maintenance but it has just become part of my routine.

I had previous tried Zyrtec a couple of times and each time he threw up. He is fine with Benadryl. But so far the Cytopoint has made a huge difference so we'll see how it continues.

Thanks for sharing your routine ! I have been doing the betadine soaks off and on for a year, and her paws seem to be red, but not infected. If I put socks on them so she can't lick they do a bit better. Going to trim the hair in her paws soon which should help a bit too. I guess one day she's going to end up on Cytopoint which isn't here in Canada yet. I'm not too keen on Apoquel since it increases risk of UTI and skin tumours.
