Our Frenchie puppy Junior wound up in the veterinary hospital overnight last weekend with some kind of drug toxicity. I'm wondering whether any of you have had a similar experience. It has been very scary.

We had taken him for his walk that evening as usual. He is four months old, so everything goes in his mouth, although we didn't see him swallow anything. About an hour after his walk and his usual food for supper, he had two seizures in his sleep, with bad tremors following. He was suddenly semi-conscious, couldn't stand up, and was dribbling urine everywhere. We rushed him to the emergency vet (because of course this happens on a long weekend), and by that time he had a heart arrythmia, low respiration, low body temperature, dribbling urine, dilated pupils: all symptoms of drug toxicity. They did a urine drug test, which came back negative for marijuana but positive for barbiturates! We were shocked and very sad to have to leave him at the hospital with the IV, the cone of shame, and a lot of activated charcoal to eat. There is apparently no reversal medication for barbiturates, so the vet ran some bloodtests to be sure his organs were ok, gave him fluids, and then we just had to wait it out. We got him back home a day later, still groggy but slowly recovering. Now, a week later, he is back to what looks like normal.

We live in a mixed and busy city neighbourhood, so it's possible some careless person dropped drugs on the sidewalk for him to find during his walk. Or, maybe someone spilled some prescription medication somewhere. I've scoured the house to make sure we don't have anything here that would cause these symptoms. Nothing. Of course, now we're paranoid about taking him for walks. We also threw out all of his food and treats and bought new batches, just as a precaution. Not sure what else we could do.

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.
Thanks,
Lisa

I am so sorry. How scary!!! I can't even imagine how stressful that would've been. I would be paranoid about taking my pup for a walk too after that!

I had a pug puppy that would do the same; just eat EVERYTHING and anything that was on the ground. I really don't know what else you could do but to perhaps be super vigilant about looking at what's on the ground as you walk your pup. Perhaps stay away from high traffic areas where people may congregate and drop things?

I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I'm so glad your pup is ok now!

Oh no! So sorry this happened to you guys but glad to hear he is better now.

That's horrible!! I'm glad Junior is going to be OK. I have to watch my dogs on our walks. We walk down a popular path that goes to the main train station in my area and people love to throw food & garbage around for some reason. I'm always paying attention, just in case, and am ready to pull them away if they head towards anything that's on the ground.

Oh goodness that's so terrifying!!! Glad to hear he's okay now!

OMG! Cold chills went through my body when reading your post. :fie: That's scary!
What a relief that Junior is recovering...phew! That sounded like a close call. Cannot imagine how that must have felt.

our Moses used to eat everything on walks and everywhere around that age. Later on he grew mainly out of it and it got easier. Until that....it was hawk eyes on every turn.

Thanks for the kind words. It was a really terrible experience.

We took Junior to our regular vet for a follow-up exam today, and we decided to test his urine and blood to make sure everything is back to normal. Apparently kidney damage is always a possibility with drug overdose. The vet is working under the assumption that he ate one human-sized dose of some kind of barbiturate medication, which would be a 10X overdose for a 15-pound puppy.

We should have the results of his blood and urine tests on Monday.

So sorry you and your pup had to go through this. I'm glad he is okay! Don't they just worry us sick, these frenchies?!
I had a similar experience with Stella when she was 11 weeks old. When I went to get her out of her x-pen in the am she was foaming at the mouth, shaking, had vomited all over, urinated and pooped. As I picked her up and wrapped her in a towel she had a seizure. We took her to our vet and his immediate assumption was that she had gotten into something, as puppies do. So he scoped her and found like 5 tiny pieces of black plastic/rubber in her stomach. He couldn't get them out with the scope so he had to cut her stomach open to remove them. She spent the night at the vet and we went to visit her the next day. We were told that she had just had another seizure and that they had started her on phenobarbitol. Her vet also recommended that she see a neurologist as he suspected she was hydrocephalic. An MRI confirmed that she does in fact have hydrocephalus and that's what they thought caused the seizures. To this day, I feel that it was due to what she ingested...some chemical in the rubber/plastic as she was only just over 4 lbs. I weaned Stella off of the phenobarbital over the next couple of months and I'm so happy she has not had a seizure since that day at the vet's office.
I hope Junior's blood work comes back good. Good luck!

I am so glad Junior has recovered. I'd keep walking him, though, because that has to be a freak thing that happened.

Someone dropped a prescription pill in our hotel room and house keeping missed it.

Our 9 month old almost got ahold of it. I about had a heart attack. It was tylonal/caff (I googled it) but what if he would've eaten it! People are ridiculous and it's a shame they are!

Hoping his bloodwork comes back ok! Let us know for sure!

I can't imagine going through this. Thank God he is okay. I am keeping my fingers crossed that his kidney test will come back normal. They are so low to the ground that they seem to find everything. Please keep us posted.

Thanks for sharing your story, Laura. I have a sense of how you must have felt. Glad Stella is ok.

Ironically, the phenobarbital that your Stella was taking (a barbiturate to control seizures) is the most likely culprit that got Junior -- just in a big overdose in his case. Thanks to our recent misadventures, I have learned that drugs in that class have some street value, particularly when mixed with other drugs, but they're more commonly used for people and animals on a prescribed basis.

Oh my goodness.... that is sooo awful! Glad she is ok!

OMG.... how terrifying! we had my b/f father staying with us for 4 months and this was one of our fears as he was always dropping pills on the floor.

So very happy your baby is better and you got him to the hospital for help. GOD only knows where the pill came from and I would have done the same thing with the food -- trash and start over.

I hope Junoir is doing well now. How scary for both of you. Just give him lots of kisses and hold him tight but seriously that was pretty horrible for the poor baby. [emoji177]

Hey Lisa, I'm glad Junior is doing better.

We took Maximus to the ER in early June because of similar symptoms. I woke up to feed/walk Maximus but he looked so sick. He was trembling and walking slowly while dribbling urine. His back legs looked almost paralyzed. He looked so bad we really thought he was dying. This was the ONLY time he ever refused food.

In the ER, the vets said it looked like his ate marijuana and asked if this was a possibility in our home. They said it was pretty common and see these cases often. If Maximus picked up something, it had to be from outside because we puppy proofed our apartment and neither of us smoke or do drugs. I see all kinds of crap on the sidewalk but Maximus usually doesn't eat the garbage. Sometimes he will pick it up and spit it back out. I didn't think people would be stupid enough to be smoking pot outside throwing it out since we live in Manhattan and there's always people everywhere. We did the drug tests and it came back negative.

This was the ER visit where we found out Maximus had elevated liver enzymes. I'm not sure if the two are even related. I personally think he might have chewed some gum from the streets because I live in a pretty busy area and I always see "chiclet" gum boxes. There are tourist buses from Canada that get dropped off on our street for the people visiting Central Park. :)

I also forgot to mention... the other night we saw a couple smoking pot right outside on a quieter street.... I guess some people are that stupid. And seriously why do so many people smoke cigarettes? Maximus LOVES playing with the clear wrapper.

Jesica, that sounds very similar to what we saw in Junior. Is Maximus ok now? I hope so. I've heard a lot of Frenchies have elevated liver enzymes, but don't know what causes that.

Junior's follow-up bloodwork and urinalysis from one week after the incident have all come back normal. The only weird symptom left is that a few days after his hospital stay he got very red skin between some of his toes. The vet thinks it might be a reaction to the drug he ingested. Either that, or hypersensitivity to some new food we tried him on. In any case, we have an antibacterial cream and we're doing foot soaks twice a day. It seems to be clearing up.

JuniorsMom Maximus still has elevated ALT but shows no symptoms. His biles acid and ultrasound came out pretty normal. We are thinking of NOT doing the liver biopsy....
