Expressing anal glands

NOT THE MOST FUN TOPIC

Aiko has been scooting.... I assume this is what needs to be done

Has anyone done this themselves? I googled it.. and it sounds AWFULLL... is it really that bad to do?

Or is this just something you take em in to the vet and pay to get done?

Buster expresses his own and it is a horrible stink afterwords! He has done a scooting, bobbing up and down "dance" when his tail pocket needed cleaning.

Some people with strong stomachs express their dog's anal glands. I'd take our dogs to the vet and have a tech do it.

I dont really have a strong stomach... but our vet is a bit of a drive.....

I only say that because my aunt is a dog groomer and she would tell me stories about it LOL

Yup, groomers will do it. They even do it at Petsmart and probably Petco if you have one of those nearby.

Both the vet techs and/or a groomer will do it for a small fee, which I gladly pay

Years ago my husband would help out a friend who was a groomer. He would bathe and dry the dogs and she would do the grooming. Part of the bathing process would be expressing the anal gland. He did it on Bambi after she was scooting and it worked out fine. He isn't totally confident, though, and doesn't like to do it. I swear I think I watched over an hour of youtube videos on the process because I figured I could do it (you can find anything on youtube) and it looked easy and the dogs didn't seem to mind, so I tried it. I think Bambi knew what was coming and squeezed her butt hole so tight, nothing was going in there. :lol: Needless to say, there was no way I was going to do it. The groomers do it all the time and don't charge much. I think if you are going to do it, you have to commit to it and proceed with confidence. Otherwise, it's too stressful on everyone!

My girl does this because she has a "tight vulva". If she scoots and I kind of "spread" her crotch area I almost ALWAYS see a bit of yeast build up I wipe with a baby wipe & put some destin & voilá no scooting & no yeast within the first 12 hours.

Ohhh this thread has made me laugh!

The only time this has been an issue with Dexter is after he had his head op, and wasn't eating properly. When I took him to get his head checked I asked the vet about it and it turned out that it had to be an "inside job" as his butt area is too tight to do anything externally. Well, the look on his face!!! I know it's mean to laugh, but he was absolutely disgusted!! Violated! For about 3 hours afterwards he sulked and wouldnt even look at me!

Dont they make us laugh in the strangest of ways!!

HAHAHA this made me laugh so hard. Banksy would be the exact same way. He's such a sensitive boy you can actually tell by his facial expressions when he's not impressed. He gets so offended by the funniest things.

They sure are hilarious dogs. No shortage of laughter in our house that's for sure

As a groomer yes we do express the anal glands. If I have a problem I always tell the owner they need to visit the vet, the vet will do it internally.
