poor little girl managed to get her entire dew claw torn off while playing with another dog. we think it just got caught on something while running around. she was immediately brought to a vet and patched up. her whole claw came off so that was sort of a blessing in disguise, since if there was still some left, they would have had to manually remove the remaining claw resulting in more pain.

so far its been about 5 days since it happened. the first 2 days she was definitely in pain and limping. today shes been running around our living room with no problem at all. her bandage has been changed about 3 times in total so far. shes also been taking antibiotics to prevent infection.

my question is, does anyone generally know when we can remove the bandage for good? i understand the actual claw probably won't grow back for months, and the quick just seems too exposed but i've read thats normal while healing?

Can't answer your question, I just wanted to say poor baby and I'm glad she is doing better now.

I would leave it for about 10 days, just to give it time to heal.

Poor baby!! :( Your vet should be able to tell you when the bandage can come off safely.... but I think David is right too!!

That happened to my bull terriers too! My vet explained that it's like losing a fingernail to us...ouch. It should grow back fine though.

I'm thinking a good two weeks to make sure the wound is closed up and covered
