Need help 13 weeks French bulldog puppy has had diarrhea since I got him. He did end up having parasites and was treated, but still has diarrhea. Vet reccommed GI dog food, but still no luck. Then recommended rice and lean hamburger, he only had one normal poop on this. Any suggesttions? He was also on a probiotic

Did he get retested for the parasites? Was it giardia? That one could be a little bit hard to get rid of and sometimes they need another round of medication. How long have you had him? Sometimes the stress of a new home and environment can cause diarrhea or the food you are feeding (brand or amount). What are you feeding and how much?

Yes he was diagnosed with giardia he's been on meds for 3 weeks had him for 4 weeks he was on royal cannin puppy chow 3/4 of a cup twice a day now he is on white rice and lean ground beef to try and firm up his stool. Also was using a probiotic with his chow haven't seen much improvment

I'd try feeding him 1/2 cup 3x a day and see if that helps. Royal Cannin is not a very good food.

Ya I know it's crap we had him on Fromm golden puppy but then our vet told him to get on this gi crap which he hates and now she recommended we try him on the rice and beef to try to firm up his stool

Feeding RC is not going to help, it can be contributing to the cause. I assume he’s been retested for giardia after finishing the meds. Giardia can be hard to get rid of. Fromm also has a all life stages line that you can feed.

Yes I've heard and ya I know the roc is terrible it's what the breeder had him on so we had to give it to him as we transitioned him off of it. And yes last time we brought him in the giardia was gone

Okay, if it were me, I would get him off the RC as soon as possible. And you said he was on probiotic, is he still on a probiotic? If not, I would start that again especially if he was on meds for 3 weeks. You need to get his gut healthy again. You can try adding in some pure pumpkin to help firm up his stool (not the pie filling).

Pumpkin has way more fiber than rice and easier to digest. I'm sure the meds did a number on his gut. Keep him on probiotics and digestive enzymes. Getting them from whole foods is best, but you can also do supplements.

Try switching to a low allergy food such as Earthborne Holistic dry dog food or dehydrated raw or frozen raw. Add a probiotic, Herbsmith Microflora Plus highly recommended on this forum. If it still continues you can try tylosin antibiotic 5 mg/pound twice daily for 6 weeks - should be prescribed by vet.

Our guy had Giardia as well and it took awhile before poo firmed up. We used pumpkin and had him on Orijen puppy which he did really well with. We also added Olive leaf to help with GI and anti-inflammatory. Even then his poo (though not diarrhea) was still on the softer side. Most recently we have been also giving Primal raw frozen. Oh my goodness what a difference!! Not only is his movements more firm but he also goes a lot less often. I know raw is hard for some, but I can now see why so many love it!
