So, I have a 2 year old Bengal in the house. She likes to be tucked away in the bedrooms, closets or on high objects and occasionally climbs and lays on her cat towers. She does not like being held or sitting next to her human and being pet.

When I brought Q home, the cat Che Che locked herself in a room for 2 weeks. She finally started cautiously coming out and looking in the x-pen from a far. There was a month of progress when she would play cat and mouse with Q while Q was in her x-pen and most recently the cat is hissing and growling while pulling her ears back. A few times she put her arm in the x-pen and slowly swatted the dog, who was too far away to be touched.

Well, there has been a change in the scenario. Q has graduated from her x-pen and now has full reign of the living area with it enclosed with the 2 ft x-pen stretched out. The cat is going in the space and prowling after the dog and once within 3 ft she hisses and growls. The cat is also using the couches as a perch to hiss and howl at Q on the ground and is now violently swatting her paw at the dog with claws out. The cat has even attacked my arm last night, which she has never done while I petted her.

The only thing that Q has done is jumped on the side of the couch from the ground towards the cat and less than 5 times has chased the cat. The other times Q happily prances around the house and when she sees the cat, she veers the other way unphased.

I'm not blaming the cat or dog in this situation because it's an overwhelming situation for both of them, mostly the cat who has free reign for 2 years and now has this prancing snorty rolly polly in her house.

Any suggestions on how to 'discipline' the cat so she stops acting violently without over disciplining her so she doesn't go in hiding? Any other ideas on how to handle this?

This picture is of Che Che hanging out in the loft while I worked BEFORE I got Q.

I'm not a cat person, so no help here, but I would say if the cat keeps up the aggression with the claws out, it might be time to de-claw the cat, so she will not harm the pup or you. I hope someone on here has some good ideas to help the situation.

What a beautiful kitty! I don't know if you have ever watched the show My Cat From Hell on Animal Planet but it might have some tips you can try http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/my-cat-from-hell. I actually watch the show even though I don't have cats (but I love them) and I know there have been episodes with cats acting like that towards other cats, kids, dogs, etc. Unfortunately I can't remember what was done to stop that behavior. This show is basically like having Caser Milan but it's a guy that works with cats.

Che Che is a beauty, but I unfortunately have no understanding of cat behavior.... hope you can get something figured out, but it sounds like de-clawing is in the cards

In my experience it is impossible to actually "discipline" a cat. They have no sense of shame, as dogs do. Beware, as your cat may yet start peeing all over the house in defiance/territory claim.

I would talk to a cat behaviorist. I wouldn't recommend declawing. It will often make the cat more aggressive because it feels defenseless and they will start to bite and bite HARD. You can, however keep the cat's nails trimmed. Does she have some high places where she can get to that are hers and hers only? There are also some things like pheromone sprays, collars, etc. NutureCALM is a good one that I have heard of people having success with. Might be worth it to give that a try. You could also try to increase kitty's exercise.

I agree with not declawing. Not only can it add to more aggression, but I just think it's a cruel thing to do to a cat.

Hudson has a great Bengal friend named Hobbes. They keep Hobbes' nails trimmed short, which is definitely the way to go with having cats around dogs. Hopefully the cat will eventually adjust. Here is Hudson and Hobbes the Bengal

Those 2 are so darn cute together!

Well, we've made some progress; however the cat's new place to sit is on the TV stand in front of the TV. Q likes to stand on her hind legs and rest her paws on the stand and will 'mouth' the cat. The cat will begin to swat and growl at the dog but Q usually is bored within seconds and walks away. The cat I'm assuming is trying to play because she often runs up behind the dog and sniffs her booty and runs away. Either way I'm still keeping a close eye on them as I don't want the cat to be having a bad day a take a strike at the dogs face AND most important, her eyes.

Pardon the milk box, I have random items and boxes throughout the house as cat and dog barriers.

Definitely do not de-claw. Try and keep its nails trimmed though. Also, you can get nail covers for your Bengal if you are really desperate. Just give them both time to figure each other out. Cats and dogs play so differently.

Cats can be trained. When I only had a cat I trained him to come home at 11pm so he wouldn't be out all night. He used to follow me to the store and walk back home with me and he would greet me by the door every day. Basically, my cat was a dog. lol!

That sure is one good Iooking famiIy you have there, do not de-cIaw they are figuring it out sure the cat is a bit jeaIous having to share the house and affection but time does wonders

Glad to hear you're making progress, and someone mentioned above, there are "claw covers" that basically look like nail polish once they're on.

I'd get them for a cat if I had one just because they're adorable [emoji5]️

Your little fur babies are precious!

So, lately lil Miss Meow Meow has been chasing Q and vise versa. They even made a game of it this morning by chasing eachother up and down the stairs about 10x. Pardon the below picture, it was a jammy type day and I had to chop the unmakeup'd face and messy bun'd hair out of the picture. The wild beasts just stared at eachother and Che Che made her low growl. Dorks!

it is like a 'show down'... first to move gets it!

This, 100%. I've never watched My Cat From Hell, although from what I've heard they do seem to make some progress. Dogs listen to discipline and grow from it... cats get even. Good luck! She's a gorgeous girl, and I've always loved Bengals.

That's a great pic! I'm glad they are getting used to each other.

Wow, I really need to make a habit of reading the post date and all responses to the end before I offer my input... I love that they're getting along!
