Hi all,
The new pup is absolutely adorable until the second i close the crate door the howling is insane!!! Ive gone step by step through letting her sniff the crate, leaving little treats inside, feeding her in the crate and the second i close the door she just howls! I have tried the NILIF method but its hard to praise her when she's quiet as she's never quiet! I have neighbours so theres only a certain amount of time i can let her howl before they'll start complaining.. Its early days and i just don't want to make any mistakes and make it harder for myself to correct in future. Any advice??

Aiko did the same when she first came home

A firm NO and then you have to make sure you DO NOT let her out when she howls. Or else she will know all she has to do is howl and the door will be opened for her. You have to ignore her until she is quiet, and then let her out. and she will know she will not be let out unless she is quiet and behaving.

I would let the neighbours know you are crate training, and maybe try practicing it during the day so its not a disturbance.

She will catch on quicker if you are consistent. good luck :)

Great, thanks for the advice!! She's alot more settled and were slowly building the time adding another minute or so to the time she's in the crate. Only up to 5 minutes so im sure she'll get the hang of it x

You have received excellent advice! Good luck, she will settle in soon!

With Wally I had to clap my hands and say a firm 'NO noise!', then I would walk away. Just saying no didn't work for him, I had to add the clap in too. The clapping seemed to have snapped him out of his tantrum. Good luck! She will learn to love her crate soon enough.

Yes this is what i had to do, just a firm NO wasn't enough and didn't seem to snap her out of what she was doing but with the added clap it seems to have worked and last night she slept in the living room in her crate all night!! So it definitely worked. :) thanks for the advice x

Those of us old timers may remember, "Clap on; clap off. Clap on; clap off; the Clapper."

Ha, ha!

My girl just recently decided that whining and howling was her ticket out of her crate. My husband ever so kindly lets her out and reinforces this behavior. I found covering the front of the crate with a towel, and leaving the sides open, and telling her NO quite loudly nips it in the butt haha.

Good luck!

Edit: I forgot to mention that she's 2 1/2 and been crate trained since 8 weeks.

I feel you!! I try to be strict as i know if i ignore the howling it'll stop after a few minutes, my boyfriend thinks its mean and lets her out!! She'll get there, she's going alot better and the past 2 days has even gone into the crate on her own for a sleep :)
