Has anyone experienced the “hunger pukes”? Carlton gets fed at approximately 5 pm and again at 6:30 am depending on my schedule. However, over the last month, whenever he is not fed by 6:30 am he dry heaves and vomits up bile. 😫 going to take him to the vet this week, but I’m pretty confident from my research that he’s doing this because his stomach is empty around that 630 am mark... should I try bumping his dinner feedings back..?

Bile is usually an indication of an empty stomach. Can you feed him later in the day or perhaps give him some snacks before he goes to bed so he has something in his stomach?

It's because his stomach is expecting something at that time. It can also help, if you are able, to not be on a strict feeding schedule, that way he won't know when food is coming until you start prepping.

Oh wow. I did not know this information. Daphne is on a strict schedule and she has puked nothing but a bit of bile twice in the last couple weeks. She gets small treats throughout the day for going potty outside, but it was at a time when it was close to feeding. Wow. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, dogs can fast (and probably should, according to a lot of literature), but if their stomach is empty and they are expecting food, "hunger pukes" can be an issue. If they think food is coming, then the body releases all this acid into the stomach in anticipation of having to digest the food, and then gets upset when no food comes. If you never plan on fasting them and/or a strict schedule works for you, feeding them a little snack before bed usually helps, depending on when they are getting the pukes.

If Daphne does puke bile, it is usually around 4 pm right before I would be preparing to feed her. So interesting...I will have to up the treats or give some other snack if it keeps happening. Thanks!

Yep... empty stomach syndrome! Lambeau gets it sometimes so we give a small snack at bedtime —- handful of frozen green beans
