Hello,

I do hope you will be able to help me with 2 affairs that are currently worrying me.

My frenchie is 1,5 years old. It's perfectly fine apart from 2 things:

1. Recently I've found out that he's allergic to some products. He has shed a lot. But now, that he is all right he still does shed. Is it normal for Frenchie? Some people told me that they shouldn't shed too much and it happens only 2 times per year when the weather changes. What I mean is that his coat looks very fine, but for example when you wear black trousers and he wants to cuddle you can easily see a lot of it on your pants. So is it normal or should I be worried?

2. He used to have some problems with legs. He had the RTG, everything is perfectly fine. But for some time he has been kind of limping... When he is outside and walks he tends to lift up his right back paw. So he walks but almost all the time that paw goes up. It doesn't hurt him, it doesn't happen at home, when I touch him there he doesn't show any sings of pain. Doctors said they don't see any inflammation etc. Is it normal? What should I do?
It is really strange: sometimes he can walk for 100meters normally without lifting it up and sometimes he does it all the time.

What gifts? :w00t:

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

My Frenchie is pied, so when ever she is on my lap ( a LOT) I always have a ton of white hairs all over me. It's just part of being owned by a dog ;-)

Invest in some lint brushes - haha.

I'm not sure what the limping thing is. Sounds like you've addressed it at the vet's office already, so that's good. A couple times I've been on a walk with mine and she might lift up her leg and kinda hop on three legs for a couple steps. I'll stop walking and massage her paw, make sure she didn't step on any pricker or piece of sharp pinecone, etc... after I massage it, she is fine and we continue our walk. This has happened maybe three times since I've had her.

Maybe take her back to the vet if it continues on a regular basis and ask for an x-ray?

Let us know an update when you get a chance.

So shedding and leaving a lot of coat around is normal? I don't know why I strongly think the franchise don't shed but maybe I just read it in a stupid book...

Yes, the vet says he doesn't know what may be causing the limping. He had an x-ray of everything, his spine, legs etc. The vet was amazed - he said his spine and other parts look perfect, especially for this breed. I don't know him to take it again now because it needs general anaesthesia etc and I think it causes too much stress for him.

The weird things are: 1. I am 100% sure it doesn't hurt him at all. He doesn't move away when I touch him there or whine when walking. 2. Yesterday in the evening he would walk normally for like 20 steps, then a few "lifting ups", and then back to normal.

Maybe this is reaction for the weather? It is winter, minus temperature now. But as fas as I remember it happened at the end of the summer and autumn too.

Im just thinking - maybe giving him a paw x-ray is less massive than the whole spine and body and doesn't require general anaesthesia?

Jax probably sheds about twice a year. What are you currently feeding?

Do you want to say that twice a year you see a massive shedding but it's not that much apart from that? You see, there's a different opinion.

Currently I'm feeding the Farmina N&D Chicken and Pomegranate, but I think I'm gonna change it to the Farmine Vet Life Ultrahypo because of the allergic problems he has and also recurring throwing up (a few times a week). I just have to consult it with the vet.

He doesn't shed as much as he used to when we were treating his allergy but it still goes on

They normally blow their coats twice a year (winter and summer) and that is when I see the most shedding. Other than that, it really isn't much other than some hairs here and there.

Diet can affect their coats. I feed raw so that might be why he doesn't shed much other than twice a year. Do you give any coconut oil or salmon oil? Those can potentially help with coats as well.

He used to take "Kerabol" - I don't know if you have it in the US, this is just a complex of vitamins for skin and coat problems. I don't use any oil - I might but first I need to check if with the vet because he may be allergic to that.

And about that new feed it says: "Allergic reactions. Atopies. Farmina Vet Life UltraHypo is a complete dietetic food for dogs formulated for the reduction of alimentary intolerance to ingredients and nutrients and for dogs suffering from alimentary allergies and atopies. Used as a diagnostic tool (elimination diet). Especially indicated also in subjects refractory to treatment of atopic dermatitis and recurrent diarrheas."

They also had regular hypoallergenic but I think the one may be best for him since he is quite sensitive to certain type of food.

Farming is a great food... try one of the novel proteins I think they have duck or boar... try to avoid chicken and grains

I would brush him every day. You will get a ton of hair and it will stimulate his skin. Eventually after a week or so, you will get most of the hair that is going to shed and then it will be much lighter. I think it really is good for them.

I wonder if the other with his leg is from a mild luxating patella. Every time Bambi gets up, she stretches her hind legs straight out behind her, one at a time, because I think it feels good. I can tell she is not in any pain, either. She does have low grade luxating patellas. I'm glad it doesn't seem to hurt him.

Hello! This is very interesting what you've said. Someone has actually told me lately that it might be something with patella too! But if it was a patellar dislocation I think he wouldn't be able to walk at all right? So if it's mild like you said can something be done about it? And can you do an x-ray or ultrasound without general anaesthesia? Maybe checking just that paw would be possible?

And mine does the same! He stretches ALL the time. After ever nap, even the smallest one he likes to lay on a carpet and stretch on it. Do you think it may be a cause?

There is one thing that doesn't help but I think there's not much I can do about it - he likes to jump on an armchair or bed and then go down and then again... but I think I will ask my doctor next time :)

Update: the vet said we can try the new feed, he's not allergic to it. As for the coat she prescribed "skinoxan" which I believe is our local medicine for dogs with coat problems like excessive shedding. It is just a complex of vitamins. She said I have to give it to him for at least 3 weeks and It shall help. He was also given "Controluc" for vomits (he doesn't throw up too much but it happens every week and it might be connected to his allergy). We'll see

I am certainly no clinical expert, however, I think they can have luxating patellas and still be able to walk okay, jump, etc. I think rather than dislocating all the way, it just kind of moves out of place from time to time. I also notice when I pick Bambi up sometimes that he knee will make the slightest cracking sound. I have assumed that this is her patella as well as she has had it since the day we got her (when she was three) and the vet said she had luxating patellas.

Good luck; I would still lightly brush your baby every day in spite of any meds she is taking.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like a knee issue to me. There are different grades of luxating patella. Gus has it in both knees it's never bothered him at all until recently when he injured his right leg when Gracie was playing too roughly. I'd consider getting referred to a specialist to get it checked out. Sometimes, they might suggest surgery to fix it before the pup can do more damage to it.
