Fiona randomly gets an itchy tail area and scoots around. Sometimes its worse and other times it seems to be just fine. We're aware of anal glands and it doesn't seem to be that (as in she gets expressed at our vet and she still continues to scoot).

she has one of those tight corkscrew tails so we clean it with malacetic wipes. the vet also recommended ear cleaning solution to get rid of any yeast under there so we've been doing that as well. overall though it doesnt seem to have much effect so its been hard to determine whats causing it.

we're wondering if any allergies can actually ONLY affect the tail or would we generally see other signs? overall her skin everywhere else has been REALLY great. when we got her as a puppy she had spots here and there but have since all vanished when we changed her food over a year ago.

Could just be you need to get a real good cleaning up under the tail.... my Bulldog had a very tight tail and at times I had to spray cleaning solution up under and then wipe a few times to get all the dirt out

I agree with Christine 2bullymama, try to clean under the tail and into the pocket and dry it. JLO is doing the same thing every once in awhile.

Does Fiona have a hidden tail pocket?

i would say its pretty hidden. but we do get up there as deep as we can with malecetic wipes. we dont dry it afterwards though (since the malecetic wipe is supposed to be drying itself). we then apply ear cleaning solution in the tail pocket about an hour later for any potential yeast build up.

I feel your concern about Fiona's itchy butt, Buster has a very tight tail and doesn't like anyone messing with it. He doesn't scoot on the floor, he sits and spins and bounces. Anyway, I clean it daily and he usually doesn't do his sit and spin bouncy dance anymore so I guess the cleaning is working.

so far the cleaning with malacetic wipes and ear cleaning solution hasn't really done anything. she still scoots. we just got her anal glands expressed and there was barely anything in there, so it isn't that either. not sure what else it could be cause the rest of her body seems just fine. theres no weird smells or anything from the tail area so it doesn't seem to be yeast either, even though we're still cleaning it with yeast/ear cleaning stuff anyway.

Could be allergies.

we were seeing if its just seasonal allergies but its now freezing winter and theres been no improvement. we were wondering if food allergies could ever cause tail-only issues though?

Maybe she's allergic to something you clean the house with? What kind of flooring do you have? Maybe it's a dust allergy? :( just trying to throw a suggestion out there! I'm sure this is frustrating!

we have hardwood flooring in the majority of the house and swiffer the floors at least 1-2 times a week. yeah i have no idea whats going on. wipes and cleaning her tail don't seem to help.

I would try sweeping or a swiffer duster mop 3 times a week, mopping with a natural cleaner (method maybe? Or Google how to make your own?) the other 2 days. See if it clears up at all. Maybe just try that one week. If it doesn't help its onto the next thing to try! Plus your house will be very very clean that week. :-P

Well now we are including a germistat wash around her tail. Everyday twice a day. She's also been prescribed some Reactin to help with any allergy symptoms. And now she's on a vet hypoallergenic diet based on kangaroo. We'll see how it goes.

I know this is years later but did you ever figure out what was causing the itchy bum? My Fiona has the SAME problem and it’s driving us all crazy. The vet doesn’t want to try prescription meds just yet unless it continues. We just adopted/rescued her from a puppy mill in Missouri so we’re all still figuring each other out :)

Did the vet check the tail pocket? Maybe anal glands?

Hi! Yep we checked that. Barely anything there, I suspected she had a UTI (which she did) but that’s testing negative too now and still continuing to scoot in circles. The vet suspects maybe allergies or the dry air since it is winter in Minnesota now.
Oops i forgot to add that she doesn’t truly have a tail pocket. I don’t think anyways and I’ve asked because I never knew that was a thing and the vet said she doesn’t have one but her tail must’ve been docked shorter than natural at some point.

Just a quick pop in here as we went through many a butt scooting/swirling. Stanley has a tail pocket that we previously treated with malecetic wipes as well, as we actually found we were doing it TOO frequently and it was causing more irritation than help. He'd ended up getting a bacterial infection that we treated successfully with mupiricin. Could you get a swab done to make sure there's no infection? We just make sure to clean his pocket 2-3x a week with unscented baby wipes and have kept everything at bay.

Mine was doing the exact same thing not too long ago and it turned out she had a single flea bite in that area and since she is very sensitive, it caused intense itching in the butt/tail area and she was doing exactly as you described. Not suggesting it is the same for your dog, just wanted to share what was bothering my dog. I was horrified myself as I'd never seen a flea anywhere near her and I did not have her on prevention. I obviously remedied that immediately. Gave her a Bravecto and a nice soothing bath, washed all her bedding, cleaned the carpets and problem solved. The vet explained to me that even 1 flea bite from a dog who is very allergic, can have this reaction. I tend to always choose holistic stuff when I can, but obviously it wasn't cutting it this time and she will be given flea/tick prevention year round because of what happened.
