Hi there. Our 3.5 year old frenchie is requiring surgery on a luxating patella on at least one hind leg - perhaps at some stage both. He will probably also require surgery on his cruciate ligament. With at least 6 weeks cage rest ahead and no hydrotherapy places in our area, we are looking for anyone's experience with this type of surgery and post operative care.

We took in a rescue that required the luxating patella surgery. We had our vet do the surgery and he told us to walk him several times a day for short walks at first, plus work the joint several times a day. No hydrotherapy was done on him and he is fine today. That was several years ago. This was on an English bulldog.

We had to do this with our Bulldog, twice. We turned one of our spare rooms into his 'bedroom' and slept on the floor with him for the 6 MONTHS (remember we did this twice). We removed all the furniture, place a mattress on the floor and took turns sleeping with him. We placed a baby gate at the door so he could see everuything going on when we were not with him and we carried him up/down stairs and only took him out for potty and he was always on leash

Our male bull terrier had this surgery. He had to stay the night at the vet. He went out to do his business always on a leash and we had to take him in for adequan injections for joint repair. He was a big strong boy, so we couldn't risk him injuring himself.
