Moses spent few hours in a clinic yesterday :(

In the morning he started to get like cold shivers which didn't seem to stop by mid day. I didn't know what was causing them since nothing un-usual has happened. He was also very mellow and refused to eat and drink. Didn't limp or show any other signs of pain.

All I know that shivering dog is most likely feeling some pain. I rushed him to the clinic and they took him in . They run wide blood tests, took temperature and put him on IV. They felt his spine, legs etc but Mo did not react to any of that.
All blood tests came back normal...I'm still waiting result of the crp value.

He seemed to get better after spending some time in IV and he ate a handful of dry food before they let him out, but they did not find anything what was causing this. The shivers suddenly stopped around 13pm, conveniently when I parked my car to the clinic, so they didn't see the shivers and asked me to take a video if it continues and then call back.

We just woke up and Mo seems still mellow...doesn't want to eat or drink or move much. I felt him shiver a little during the night since he sleeps right next to me.
I also noticed that some stuff has leaked from his right ear...doesn't smell though, but it has leaked to the fur below the ear, so I can feel it. He has not been paying attention to his ear, but is licking his front paws. coincidence or the cause? hmmmm.

I believe this mystery has been revealed. I have been wiping and rubbing his ear and quite a bit of water came out. Water must have got stuck in the ear with an air bubble or something when he was diving and splashing in the water at the cabin on Sunday. Never thought of this earlier since he did not show any signs what the problem was.
He has now been shaking his head and I guess most of the water is out since he seems much more alive now. He just ate and drank :D

So, it looks like Moses just did a few hundred euro dive, oh well...main thing is that he seems to be better now. Phew!

I just have to limit his diving from now on. He likes to paddle in the water and poke his head under water to pick up stones. Weirdo.

Poor Moses! I am glad he is feeling better now! And honestly,in situations like that, its always best to get them checked out. I would have done the same :)

Oh, and Maple also does this weird rock diving thing :P All the other dogs around her play with sticks, and she diggs for rocks lol.

I am glad you figured it out and Moses no longer has the shakes!

Glad to hear mine is not the only goof doing that :D

I have been trying to recall why this happened now, since he has done "rock diving" many times before...then it hit me. At one point Moses climbed on to a flat rock trying to get hold of a sea weed floating by and he slipped and went under. I did not panic since he got straight up and started to run and splash as if nothing had happened.
I guess when he slipped he hit the water ear first...that might explain it.

I did some googling of the subject and when water gets trapped inside the ear, it's called swimmers ear. There are also some drying products available to avoid ear infections.
I do not have any on hand, so I just clean it with dry cotton cloth and maybe once settled will rinse it with normal ear cleaning product.

I am glad you figured it out and Moses no longer has the shakes!

Tell me about it! I was going nuts here and feeling so helpless when I didn't have any clue why it's happening. I went through all horror scenarios of Mo getting hold of some poisonous stuff or some structural/neurological trauma etc etc. Also the clinic first searched traces of any toxins.
What a nightmare to wait for the news at the clinic lobby :fie:

My girl sometimes shakes in the mornings. She's just cold LOL.

These babies really can drive you crazy! Glad it was just some water stuck in his ear!

Oh Yes, not a boring day when owning a frenchie! Luckily most days more relaxing than others :whew:
Who would have guessed...a swimmer's ear!?! Gees

Oh, Moses, you had us so worried!!! :whew: Chiana, so glad you figured it out and Moses is okay!

After I do Bambi's ears, I dry them by sticking dry cotton balls down there and wiggling around. Then I take cotton swabs and put them down her ear canal (gently) and rotate them, then repeat with a fresh one until the Q-Tip is dry when you feel it. Their canal goes at a 90 degree angle at the bottom so you aren't in danger of hurting the ear drum. I don't force it and only put it in as far as it will go easily.

So happy the mystery is solved and your baby is feeling better.

Poor baby. I'm glad that was all it was though, and not something more serious.

Went for another vet visit today. The right ear kept bothering Mo and they found a loads of bacteria in it. Got some meds, so hopefully he will feel better soon.
Sea water and blocked ear don't mix well.

:help: I was just reading the instructions of one of the meds Moses was described today and did a web search. I found out some very disturbing experiences, such as deafness.
The med is called EasOtic.

Does any of you have experience in using that med??

Vet instructed to use this EasOtic every evening for 7 days in the right ear and Malacetic Aural every morning for both ears.

The thing is also that the ear channel was so swollen and full of stuff that the vet could not see if the eardrum was intact. I don't really feel comfortable using this...but I need to do something fast to prevent the infection to go even worse.

I did not use the med last night.

I just called to the clinic out of town, where Moses was initially taken for the shivers for a second opinion of the med the local vet described. They did not recommend to use it since there is not a certainty that the eardrum is ok. They also said that if the ear is full of goo, the medication will not get to where it should go. First the ear must be cleaned properly.
Moses is booked there for Friday for ear cleaning. It will be done with some sort of a suction device, so Moses must be sedated :fie:

Now I just try to get as much of the goo out with the other solvent until then.

GREAT catch on the med! wow --- scary, but so glad it was nothing too serious and you will get him back in shape

I'm so sorry that this has turned into a serious issue. Good for you for doing your research and then getting a second opinion. I hope he feels much better after the procedure. Maybe antiobiotics in this case are warranted, once his ear is cleaned out. Good luck and please keep us posted.

We just came back from the clinic. All went well and Mo's both ears has been cleaned.

The right ear has a bad infection in the inner ear, and as I suspected, the eardrum was torn. Thank god I had some intuition not to use the med given to us by the other vet!
The swimmer's ear has caused some serious infection and damage, but the vet said that it will all heal back to normal.

Anyhow, Mo is now on pain killers + special mix of antibiotics, which are safe to use. We'll put the meds to his infected ear twice a day for 3 weeks.
Hopefully things will get easier for him soon.
Oh...and no swimming or splashing in the water for at least 3 weeks...and no sauna either.

But, we are not quite out of the woods yet. Have you guys ever heard of "ear stones" or "ear rocks"??
The vet showed us some CT scans of Frenchies having them. She said that they are rather common with French and English bulldogs and Pugs. It is like a crystalized lump in the inner ear. These can cause so called chronicle ear infections.

So, if the infection in Mo's right ear re-appers soon after we have treated him...they will take a CT scan of his head to see if there is such "rock" which is causing it.
The rock can be surgically removed, but is rather complex surgery. I really hope we do not have to go there...

Here's our little Moses recovering from yet another rough day

GOOD lord.... I never heard of the ear stone/rocks before..... please keep us posted and I will pray it all clears up with out needing surgery

I haven't ever heard of that either, but I'd assume anything is possible. Must be a form of bacteria that solidifies and then flares up?

Keeping my fingers crossed for Mo! I know you'll get him all better in no time and I hope no recurring ear infections happen out of it! It seems like the swimmers ear caused an inner ear infection, and I don't think that it will recur...
