Hi, my frenchie Sadie, now 8 months old, started about 2 months ago chewing on her paws, scratching her ears to a point when they start bleeding (breaks my heart seeing her ears :moping:), and scratching behind her ears. We had to put the E-Collar on her.The vet said to switch food and to stay away from chicken, beef and pork and preferably lamb. I also giving her whole peas but 30 mins later she had little red spots, I guess hives on her :( the vet started her on Apoquel a few days go to relieve the itch.
Now I have to switch her food. Sadie has been eating Royal Canin Bulldog puppy food for about 5 months now. I been researching food but I can't seem to find a good dry food without chicken.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for dry food please.

GO! Sensitivity + Shine LIMITED INGREDIENT Duck for kibble.
Primal or stella and chewys duck for raw.

Unfortunately Royal Canin is not a good food at all and that may be causing the issues so you should switch her to a higher quality kibble. Instead of peas, I would also switch to green beans.

Fromm, Acana, Orijen and Zignature are just a few high quality kibbles. If you wanted to try a freeze dried raw where all you do is add water, The Honest Kitchen and Grandma Lucy's are a couple of good brands for that. Dogfoodadvisor.com is a good website where you can look at different brands of food and get the ratings for each one.

Our English Bulldog has similar food allergies. We feed Natures Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey. He is also allergic to potatoes and that food doesn't have potatoes!

Thank you everybody :thanks: I'll look into all of them.

JustynaH Apoquel is not recommended for dogs under one year of age. I would find a new vet.
As Cbrugs has stated, RC is not a high quality kibble and dogfoodadvisor.com can help you find a better food. I would also look for a grain free food with no potato.

Oh no :( is there another medication they usually give to puppys?
I researched a bit and like Nature,s variety Instinct limited and Acana duck and pear, just have to decide which one I try first.

Good catch about the Apoquel Jakeyjake!

You can try giving Benadryl. The dosage is 1 mg per pound.

If the vet suggested changing foods, I am a little skeptical as to why they would also prescribe Apoquel. My guy is on Apoquel but that is for his environmental allergies.

Both Nature's Variety and Acana are good foods and most stores will take back a bag of opened food if your dog has any issues with it. Good luck!

I would avoid the Acana duck and pear, has a lot of contamination according to cleanlabelproject . I'd stick with the Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Turkey out of the two.

Thank you so much everyone :thanks::2thumbs: I will try the nature's variety instinct limited turkey. We are not sure if it's environment, food or even both allergies. I stopped the apoquel, she only took it for 1,5 days. I will give the benadryl another try, it didn't work the first time, I gave her twice a day one pill (25mg). She is about 20 pounds. Is that enough?

If Benadryl doesn't work you can also try Zyrtec. At 20 pounds you can give either 1 10 mg pill a day or 2 5mg pills a day. Whatever over the counter antihistamine you use, make sure it does not contain any decongestants (often labeled with a D, as in “Zyrtec-D”). Some people like Zyrtec over Benadryl.

I definitely try it. Thank you :)

None of the antihistamines are very effective, but they do help a little, and I guess might as well give since they don't cause any harm either.

I went from Royal Canin (RC) small breed puppy to Wellness Core Puppy (Chicken). It was a great move but she started grazing over the food. Switched to Nulo Puppy (Chicken) MedalSeries and it has done wonders for my frenchie. Wellness helped cure some itching and stool issues but the Nulo was even better, it doesn't hurt she gobbles it up too!

I'm glad your pup is doing better.
I'm going to give the nature's variety Instinct turkey a try :)

I am curious if anyone has heard about Royal Canin's Ultamino prescription dry dog food?? We have a 1 1/2 yr old French Bulldog (Petey) whose suffered from numerous ear infections, hives under his arm pits and tummy, runny eyes and nose, he licks his paws and has that musty yeast smell. I've read good reviews on RC Ultamino and Petey's been on it for several months now, his ear infections has stopped though he still has the other allergy symptoms. We do give Petey zurtec once a day and just recently ordered the NuVet supplements but haven't received it yet to try it out. Petey seems to like the food and occasionally we do add an apple or sweet potato to his kibble to make it a little more palatable for him. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this new hypo-allergenic dry dog food? its apparently processed in a clean environment without anything to contaminate the product, it recently came out on the market and its made specifically for dogs with allergies. I'm always a little skeptical on new foods, but having found this site with other owners of French Bulldogs I always take suggestions more serious since we all share the same breed and care for their well being. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

That's a horrible food, since the two main ingredients are corn starch and Hydrolyzed Poultry By-Products Aggregate which is feather meal. You are much better off switching to a limited ingredient dehydrated or frozen raw food with a novel protein.

RC is not a good food so I would switch to a better quality kibble. Some good brands are Fromm, Orijen, Acana, Nature's Variety. I think the best thing would be to figure out if his issues are food related or environmental. I prefer to save novel proteins if regular proteins don't work. It would be good to try a food that only has one protein versus several. I would also avoid all potatoes. Potatoes can cause yeast.

"novel proteins vs regular proteins" I'm learning all news things about this breed. Cbrugs what is the difference on the proteins? or maybe there is an explanation already out there on the forum?? Since I'm trying to keep him off of all kinds of potatoes. which cause yeast I noticed that Fromm has both reg. and sweet potatoes listed. I'll check out the others recommended foods and make sure potato is not an ingredient. What we're noticing most about his allergies is the yeasty smell, hives under his arms and belly, red eyes and runny nose. I've read that daily rinses between baths made up of 1 gallon water, 1/2 vinegar and peppermint oil are good in reducing the yeast on his body. We haven't tried that yet, but plan to give it a try. We also just started him on NuVet which was also a recommendation, so we're hopeful to keep his allergies at bay.
