Hello everyone,

Well last Saturday I picked up my first puppy. He is a 9 week old Fawn Male Frenchie. It has been an interesting week. First thing i noticed the day i got him is he had a few flees. Now the strange thing is, my breeders dogs are all frontlined and have none. The only thing i could think of is he got them from his new bed i purchased from the local pet store.

Either way, two baths with Dawn blue dish soap cleared them up.

The second issue was I noticed he sounded nasally clogged up. I took him to my vet. Everything checked out good, aside from the nasal discharge. They put him on this, twice a day for two weeks.

It seems to be working good. I have not herd him clogged up in a few days. He eats like a champ and loves to play with his bigger sister.

On his vet visit, he weight a whopping 2.2lbs :)

Now, my other dog decided to get into his puppy food that the breeder was feeding him and eat all of it. I was unable to find it locally so I purchased this. How is this food for him?

Since i was unable to find it locally, and my other dog ate all his other food, i was not able to gradually switch him over. He went straight onto his new food. I was warned that he may get an upset tummy and diarrhea, however he has been on the new food a few days and his poop looks normal.

While I am away, Benny stays in his Modern Puppies - Puppy Apartment. He uses his pee pad while locked in the apartment for both poop and pee. When i let him out, he will always go back to the apartment to poop, however never goes back in to pee. He prefers the wood floor. When i catch him i say No! and place him back on his pee pad. Any other suggestions?

Anyway, here are a few photos. The people took this one of him at the vet:

Ones i took during the week.

What a little cutie! Sorry to hear about the nasal discharge and antibiotics, but you'll be glad you took care of that quickly.

Oh my goodness!! What a cutie!! Melts my heart! And the name is perfect.

Sorry to hear about the few issues right off the bat, glad you got them under control. Have you considered pet insurance? I am not sure where you live but I am in Canada and for Banksy I pay $50 a month and it covers up to $7500 annually. Something to consider as Frenchies are prone to health issues.

Blue is decent food. If it is working for him so far I wouldn't worry. You can also add canned pumpkin (not pie filling) if he is being picky or if you want to solidify his poops. a little Greek yogurt is good for them too.

As for potty training, you are just at the beginning. You will just have to be extremely patient and keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like you are off to a great start!

Yes i have. Who is your insurance through? I have been considering Healthy Paws.

We have healthy paws. No yearly coverage ceiling and a low deductible. I don't have any complaints about them and they're really good about covering things.

Benny is adorable! Congratulations. As far as the peeing thing, that might take some time. My guy NEVER pooped in the house (he whines at the door), but even still to this day if he reeeeally has to pee he will pee on the floor without whining or doing anything. Get him on a schedule and used to going outside, use huge praise and it will click eventually. After dog sitting other dogs one of the biggest things we are happy we did is the pottying on command. "Go potty" means just that and he listens.

Welcome to you and Bennie. What a little cutie! Glad he is flea free and the nasal congestion is clearing up.
As far as food goes, there are better kibbles available in my opinion. You can check out Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor if you are interested in switching.

I am going to finish him on this bag first, however i am open to recommendations for kibbles down the line.

OMG he is the most adorable little guy! love the pictures!!

:welcome3: to FBN!

Bennie is a doll! Love his markings. I tried many good foods with varying degrees of success and someone here suggested trying Orijen. Bambi seems to be doing really well on that. You are a good mommie.

:welcome3: you and Benny! He is such a cutie-pie!
Sounds like you know what you are doing. Keep up the good work :)

For potty training just stay consistent. Always treat when he goes potty outside. Stay neutral if accident happens indoors, just clean and take him outside. Eventually they will get the drift. I have found positive reinforcement very effective.

The vet did not give him his shots as he was sick with the nasal congestion, so I have not taken him outside yet as I live in an apartment with other dogs and I do not want him to catch anything. Should I be taking him out?
Also, he is a nipper. Likes to bite everything. Hands, feet, pants, his cage etc. Is there anything I should be doing, or is that just normal puppy behavior? Right now he has the puppy training apartment, where it has a bedroom and bath room. He uses the pee-pad 100% when he is locked in his cage. When he is out of his cage, he poops in there about 80% of the time. I would say pees in there about 30% of the time. He goes back to the vet in a week to get some shots.

Should I avoid taking him outside? Will he need a leash?

Also, he seems like he is on the smaller side when viewing other pups his age. How much do you think he will weigh as an adult? His eyes also face a bit out. Is this something to be concerned about?

Welcome to you and Benny!!! He's adorable of course! :)

I live in an apartment as well and didn't want to have to potty train twice, once to go inside on pee pads and then again to go outside, so I took him out before all of his shots. I used a leash, kept to a routine and any time there was a change in activity (sleeping to waking, eating, etc...) as well as kept to areas the other dogs weren't using and I didn't have any issues. No parasites, kennel cough, or anything like that. It is frustrating, they are really stubborn, but he was pretty easy to potty train in comparison to other stories I have heard.

A potty break outside should be ok, just avoid other dogs you don't know (if they are vaccinated) and piles of poop. Once he does potty outside, make it feel like a party with lots of praise, play and treats. Then he starts to connect fun time to pooping outside :)

For nipping, try to cut that as early as possible. Take a chew toy he likes and always when he starts to nip, just re-direct it to the toy. I always used to have a toy on my hand when Mo was little and when he started to nip, I just shoved the toy for him to nip and play. Eventually he got the drift.
If he nips you hard, just make a loud noise, like a puppy would do, to let him know that was too much. That is how his siblings would do to make the others learn what's is ok and what is not.

I wouldn't worry about the size, Frenchies comes in all shapes and sizes. If you hang around in our forum for a while, you will see that there are a huge variety of different sizes.

For the eyes, The photo is quite small, but from what I can see, it is more the third eyelid that is showing. To be sure that all is fine, you can ask from your vet to have a look when you go in next time for the vaccinations.

Your boy looks absolutely adorable :)
