Hello all,

My girl Olive and I are new to the site. I don't know if I'm posting this intro in the right place or what...oh well, guess we will see.

I brought Olive home on May 9th. She's a silly, farty, bullheaded little lady for sure. I have so many questions, as I am totally new to the breed. We have a cocker spaniel named Harley, but he's 10 years old so I'm a bit rusty in regards to puppy business.

Here are all of my fur kids.

Welcome to the Forum!
Your fur kids are all adorable! :)

I love the Forum, because we all love to share pics of our babies, ask questions, answer question and (and this is unfortunately not super common anymore) there is no online fights or arguments. Sure, disagreements are ocassionally there but it doesnt escalate :) Love it!
Feel free to ask any questions!

:welcome3: to FBN!

You have a great looking fur-kid family!

:smileywelcome: Welcome to you and Olive and all of your babies!

Thank you everyone!! I have a few questions/concerns regarding Olives diet. She is currently eating a food called ID because of diarrhea, I purchase this kibble through our vet. Although the food has been much easier on her stomach, I'm under the impression that it's not a long term diet. Can any of you please make some recommendations as to which food might work well for Ms. Olive? Her tummy is soooo sensitive. No Iams...her flatulence is lethal when she eats that. Also, anyone incorporate pumpkin into their Frenchies diet?

Thanks!

Hi Jess,

Are you open to switch to a raw diet? If so I can give you some tips and advice, I am actually studying to become a canine nutritionist so I know a little about a dogs diet ;)

Absolutely!!! I've read a little on raw diets but not enough to feel comfortable jumping into it with her. I'd LOVE, I mean...WE would love your advice :)

FWIW, I wish I'd kept Bisou on her raw diet when bringing her home. The breeder begged me to, but I didn't want the hassle. Months and months of issues. Finally made the switch to raw - Stella & Chewy's, and sometimes Primal - and the change has been tremendous. No gas, no scratching, her breath is fabulous, and she's started to fill in. Oh, and her pooh is tiny and barely smells. It's way more expensive to buy the pre-made products, but it's been totally worth it as far as I'm concerned. She does the pogo stick thing as I'm preparing her meals, so I think Bees is happy as well.

Since bringing Olive home, she has been to the vet 6 times and has been on three antibiotics. I'm desperate to find the solution and get her healthy. She's a happy little girl, full of vigor n spunk but I know she would feel even better if we can fix the digestion issues.

She's a total doll. Oh, those markings! That face! I want her!!!

I'm not a vet, but I've read enough stuff over the past few months (yeah, the internet, I know) to make me put a ton of faith in getting the belly healthy. From that point on, everything else falls into place. Antibiotics wipe out healthy gut flora, so you might want to start giving her a little bit of Kefir or Greek yogurt in the morning. Bisou laps that up like it's candy. We also give her a daily probiotic as an after dinner treat.

I would definatly go with a probotic and I would also take her off GRAIN and WHEAT and CORN as soon as you can. The ID diets are loaded with Corn and while easy to digest they are horrible for dogs that have allergies. My boys are eating Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy and my big boys eat the Salmon. It's been a GOD sent. I went through 5 different foods including the ID diet by Hills from my vet before I found one that worked for Ollie. He had the runs and was sick for a couple months before we got him on the right food. He was on the raw diet and it was AWFUL for him! Our vet said it gave him some of the bacterial problems he had when we got him. Some people swear by the raw diet and have great results, but I have had very bad luck with it. Everyone on here feeds something different. You just have to find what works for your baby. It will be trail and error, but you will find something. Good luck!

I do the plain yogurt mixed in with the kibble every other day.

It is a great choice to give a raw diet a try. It really is the best you can do. Iams,Purina these names all make me feel sick to my stomach. And even 'good' kibble is full of chemicals and fillers .Even though a protein source (for example Chicken) is under the first 3 ingredients it doesnt make it better. Chicken is up to 80% water and the ingredients are listed in order of the weight and thats the reason its high up in the list. But if we would only take the actual meat content of the chicken it would be faaaar down in the list. Also keep in mind that you dont know where the protein source comes from. Its is LEGAL to use dead, sick or euthanized cancer ill chicken. And I bet you the chickens were fed Grain and Hormones, so with eating this sick chicken your dog also eats the hormones and steroids and all the 'crap' the chicken ate.

Feeding raw can sound a little overwhelming at first but it really isnt ;)
The ratio needs to be 80% meat, 10% bone,10% organ. If you make your own food this is important to know. It is much easier to buy already ratioed food either online or in a pet store that sells raw food.
A dogs stomach is so acidy you would burn your hands if you touched it so dont worry about bacteria and salmonella. Even kibble contains salmonella. Keep your dogs dish clean and dont have the food out for hours on tje counter and you will be fine :) Maples meat isnt even pasteurized and we never had any problems.

Your dog should get around 2.5 % of its ideal body weight. Puppies need a little more. Around 3% of its ideal weight. You can also add some Quinoa. Maple also gets Chia Seeds every 3. day. Let them sit in water overnight to expand. Coconut oil twice a week is also beneficial.
You can dehydrate beef heats, lamb lungs or other organs that you can get your hands on.
Or you can add some Bananas,Oat Meal,Goat Milk and Honey bake it in the oven for 30 mins and you have some yummy, healthy treats.
Also you can offer a raw egg a week . If you have a trustworthy organic farm you know give the whole egg WITH shell. The eggs from the grocerie stores have all been sprayed so dont use these.

Iff you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Welcome to the site, and your baby is too cute. We feed our pups FROMM Puppy Gold in the pink bag. Feed your baby three time a day until about 6 months of age. Being 10 weeks old, I would feed about 1/3 cup three time a day. You can also give a teaspoon of pure pumpkin to help with the diarrhea. The ID food does not have enough nutrition for a pup, so I would not keep her on it very long.

Thank you everyone for all of the great advice. Looks like I need to go shopping ASAP!!! I'll keep you all updated. Thanks a ton!!!

Welcome from Anne, Gidget, Olivia & Wilson in VA. I agree with Julie Stevenson... you need to see what works best for Olive AND you. At this time, O&W eat blue buffalo puppy and G eats the adult version. I also home cook for them and give them an occasional bite of raw as I am preparing. They also get a dollop of yogurt daily.

PS - Olive is SOOOOOOo cute!!!

My guy has a suuuuper sensitive stomach, and when he's on the wrong food he is miserable -- digestive issues, itching, just not happy at all. Since switching to Stella and Chewy's, nearly all of his problems have disappeared. We couldn't be happier with the food. I add a little warm water and pull the food apart with two forks. He loves it. When he's having tummy issues we add a little pure organic pumpkin purée. Does the trick and most of them like it!

Julie,

Just to let you know, I started Olive on the Blue Buffalo Wilderness puppy food and so far good!! I've also added some things like blueberries, pumpkin, and apricot here and there along with her daily dollop of yogurt. She is filling out now and seems to be feeling bttr in general. Her horrific gas has also been curved to a minimal toot here and there....no more running farts :)
