Hello all..

Okay, my little guy Banks, 9 months old, has been eating raw for the last few months. However, with 2 frenchies you can imagine how pricey that was getting, especially because he's quite large and requires more food as a pup. I transitioned him to Acana single ingredient kibble and he was pooping about 5-6x a day in very large quantities. I tried a variety of proteins. I then switched him to Stella and Chewy raw coated kibble, in hopes he may do better on it - we are now a week in since transitioning from Acana and today he has pooped 3 times in the last 3 hours. Again, VERY large quantities for a 25 pound dog.. I tried adding pumpkin but it has not helped much.

Does anyone have any other kibble suggestions to try? Perhaps he doesn't do well on kibble? Im at a loss! :(:(:(

Any kibble is going to result in a lot of poop compared to raw. There are just so many carbohydrates in order to get the kibble together.

The 3x in three hours is probably due to the transition. Are the stools solid?

I would say his stool is in between solid and diarrhea - it’s like soft ice cream (sorry for the visual) and it is quite light in colour. I reduced his breakfast today by half a cup, but hasn’t seem to made a difference.

As long as it doesn't get worse, is probably give his body more time to adjust, rather than switching to another kibble. Add in some probiotics and digestive enzymes in the meantime.

You may need to cut back more on his food until he stops pooping "Dairy Queen" and so frequently. We feed Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey and get nice logs and nuggets 2 X a day!

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone!

As we've learned with our pup, slow and steady when it comes to any food transition. I was always so ready to jump to something else if we felt it wasn't working, and my husband would say just be PATIENT. I can imagine transitioning from raw back to kibble you might need to re-evaluate the amount of food you're feeding him. But even with that, don't do it too quickly. Stanley gets 1/2 a cup 3x a day on kibble. We found at one point we were overfeeding and that resulted in softer stools. With anything food-related, give it at least a few weeks, add in pumpkin and probiotics.

I agree with Alice.... how much are you feeding at each meal, you may be giving too much

One of my two dogs could not handle high protein kibble. I tried, once, to switch them to Orijen, and it wrecked havoc on one’s stomach, much to the chagrin of the other who really liked Orijen. Acana is made by same company and has fairly large amount of protein percentage, I believe. I also found that stool amount was greatly increased when they were on freeze dried food. There is a dried pumpkin powder called Firm Up that has worked for me in the past for dealing with loose stool issues on a temporary basis. I am sure you will get it sorted out eventually; good luck.
