Last night Twiggy started coughing. It sounded like kennel cough, but I wasn't sure. This morning I called the Vet that I work for and she met me at the clinic. She's pretty sure it's kennel cough. I guess from going to work with me. We vaccinated her right after I got her for kennel cough and it was actually not due for a few more weeks. Anyway no vaccine is 100% nor do they get every strain so she's on meds now. I hope she gets better quick. :(

Aw poor Twiggy!

I'm sorry your baby caught Kennel Cough but I'm certain she will get better soon! [emoji173]️

Thank you. I hope she is better soon. I'm having to keep my old man terrier totally away from her. She's in the crate right now because she coughs less when she is resting. :( She looks so pitiful in there.

Aweee just let her get some rest . Always the best thing when your sick!!!!

It's odd though. We haven't had any cases of kennel cough come in. Oh well, whatever she picked up I hope she is better soon. Thanks for the well wishes everyone!

Awwwwwww poor puppy. :( I had a pug that caught kennel cough once, and she recovered from it ok. If she's had her vaccines then it shouldn't be more than a cough, and that's it. If she didn't, it could become like a flu with a whole bunch of other symptoms.

Weird... When our pug got it, it was a one-off also. Who knows why my male never did? Just a fluke.

Lots of snuggles for your baby!

With such a caring parent I would say it is covered just rest and good vibes you got it covered. Keep us posted if there is any change. Hugs

Hope your baby gets better soon. It was going around all the dog shows in July around here. As you said, just because they are vaccinated, doesn't guarantee they will not get it, but it usually will help them get over it faster.

Thank you for the kind words everyone. She has almost completely stopped already. I'm sure it's from the Temaril P and not the antibiotics. They haven't had a chance to help yet. I'm just glad she isn't coughing right now. I hate seeing her like that. She is even playing with her puzzle ball right now.

She's resting now. So cute I can hardly stand it!

Awwww...poor baby. I hope all is going to the right direction and she will bounce back quickly.
On of my papillon got a kennel cough couple times, even though he was vaccinated. Both times after spending a weekend in a dog hotel. Didn't got any further symptoms, after coughing stopped he was mellow still for few days and then back to normal.
I'm sure this will be the care with Twiggy as well. She could have got it pretty much anywhere, who knows.
Glad to hear she is doing better already.

Thank you. She is a lot better already. I'm amazed really. It makes me wonder what it was exactly. Seems odd for her to stop coughing completely after the first dose of medicine. I don't know. Maybe it wasn't kennel cough. Maybe it was and just was really mild because she is vaccinated. I just hope it wasn't something more serious being temporarily controlled because of the Temaril P. I guess I'll know in a week or so. I'm a worrier when it comes to my dogs. All day at work I'm telling people not to worry and thinking they are worrying too much over nothing, but when it comes to my own I'm the worst! I put her in the bath room a couple times and ran the shower and let her breath the humid air for a little while. I stayed in there to make sure it didn't get hot, of course. That seemed to help her some earlier too. She is playing with her ball, and chewing her nylabone now. So odd. She ate like a pig tonight too, but then again her appetite has been fine the whole time.

Could the slight cough actually be from the kennel cough vaccine? Similar to how if we get a flu shot we can get some flu symptoms?

I'm not sure if that applies to dogs or not, but I know reactions can vary from breed to breed and from dog to dog, so I'd think it's possible?

Absolutely. (Especially with live vaccines). Its even possible for the dog to shed the disease on to other dogs or immunosupressed humans.Although rare.

It could have been an 'accepted side effect' of the vaccine, but if she got the kennel cough from the vaccine itself (which is possible), then Id keep a close eye on her immune system, because if it cant fight off a super mild case of a disease, then her immune system most certainly needs some TLC.

But whatever it was,Im glad she is feeling better already. ;)

You know come to think of it, you could be on to something. She just finished nursing puppies right before I got her and I got her vaccinated a few days later. Her immune system could be comprised because of the pregnancy and nursing. I didn't even think about that when I got them to vaccinate her. Now I feel really bad. I thought I was doing the right thing since she was going to be coming to work with me and we have so many dogs in and out. :(

She didn't cough at all yesterday afternoon or last night but she is coughing some again this morning, but not nearly as bad.

Awww poor baby. Hope she feels better soon! I heard it was going around close to us too. I guess it is more common in the summer and fall.

The recent pregnancy/nursing could surely be the reason why her immune system was still a little compromised.
But dont beat yourself up about it. In the end, its 'just' a 'cold', and she will be back to her normal self soon :)
