Hello!

We are looking to add a French Bulldog to our family (it will be our first pet). We have been doing research and a lot of looking and found this 5-month-old Frenchie online:

We noticed that his ears are droopy and, at first glance, it doesn't look exactly like a typical Frenchie! Before we purchase, we are wondering if the droopy ears, or any of his other features, are a potential warning sign that this puppy has, or could be vulnerable to, health defects. Any other input is appreciated too!

Thank you!!

Welcome! Frenchie’s are an awesome breed.

This guy is a cutie but he does look like he might be mixed with something. And that’s fine but I wouldn’t pay a Frenchie price if he’s not a purebred.

Hello! I agree with Cbrugs. Did the breeder advertise him as a French Bulldog (implying purebred), or a mix? I'd inquire about his parents. I'm sure this guy is a honey, but again, he shouldn't command a purebred price. Good luck with your search.

If you have your heart set on a French Bulldog, keep looking.

The more pictures you see of pure Frenchies, the more you will regret the choice to buy now.

If you are looking for a pet, similar to a French Bulldog, that looks like a great dog.

That being said, potential health issues are difficult to predict.

Thank you for the quick replies!

The breeder did not imply that he was mixed with anything and said that the Frenchie would come with AKC registration papers - I was under the impression that these papers implied purebred?

I will admit that the price is much lower than other Frenchies on the market and was wondering the reason for this. The AKC registration papers, though, are what lead me to believe that this is a purebread Frenchie raised under proper conditions.

I sent an email to the breeder asking if this puppy is a purebred and asked for pictures of the parents. I will update the thread once I hear back.

Hunting around the internet reveals the following about AKC registration:

Many people who acquire a purebred dog believe the AKC “stamp of approval” means their pet is healthy and of a certain quality.

In reality, the only thing AKC registration papers insure is that both parents of your dog are also registered.

Be careful when purchasing a puppy online. You may not know if pictures sent to you of the parents are legit. The best way to get a Frenchie would be to find a local breeder and go visit the home so you can see the conditions and at least the mom since a lot of the times the sperm is purchases so it would not be uncommon for the dad not to be around. I think there is a article on the home page about buying a French Bulldog and what to look for and what to avoid in a breeder.

The breeder, as well as AKC, confirmed that he is a purebred!

:smileywelcome: to FBN! I would go see the pup in person before buying.

I wouldn't purchase this dog as a pure Frenchie. He is adorable, but in my opinion is mixed with something else. You can't always believe what people tell you. That said, he is a cutie, and if it doesn't matter to you if he is mixed with something then by all means, look into it. Don't let them charge you for a French Bulldog though. That's a lot of money to not get what you are paying for.

Sweet puppy but it really seems like he has something mixed in. But I definitely wouldn't pay full Frenchie price. He looks a lot like a Frenchton to me.
