Hi,

We want to purchase a French Bulldog. We found those 2 and we was wondering how I can be sure that they are real frenchie. They are not registred and they come with a 1 year genetic health guarantee in condition that we bring them to vet within 72h. They are females and cost 2300$ canadian dollars. They had 2 deworming and 2 vaccinations. What you guys think?

Here are the two frenchie and their parents :

Thanks in advance for all your advice :)

my goodness -- they are so precious!

Have you actually met the pups and parent or just seeing pictures?

Hello from Calgary! :D

The females are $2300 each, correct? Having registered pups isn't the be all, end all. All it means is that the breeder submitted some paperwork to the CKC. I had a registered purebred dog that we ended up having to put down at 4 yrs old because she had so many health problems. Believe it or not, the CKC allows line breeding (aka inbreeding), so having a registered dog doesn't automatically mean you'll have less health issues. It can even be the opposite.

Are the parents registered? If so, ask to see a copy of their paperwork. I was in the same boat as you in that we purchased our Frenchies from a breeder in SK, so there was no way for me to go to the home, see the pups, see the parents, etc. I asked a lot of questions, asked to see whatever paperwork they had on hand, made *sure* (as much as I could) that the parents were out-crossed (meaning THEY weren't inbred themselves, and then passing problems along to puppies), made sure there was a health guarantee, asked to see photos, etc.

Again, even with the breeder in Calgary that we got our pug from, we went to her house, saw where they grew up, saw the parents, saw the paperwork, etc., etc., and still wound up with a very problematic puppy. You can ask all of the questions you want, but make sure they're a) the right questions, and b) keep a record of all of the emails that go back and forth.

That being said, the pups are gorgeous! They look like Frenchies to me! Even within the breed you see a lot of variation. Some are more block-headed, some very stocky builds, some slim, some more dome-headed, some wrinkly-faced, some not as much, etc.

$2300 is a 'normal' price to pay for that color. Blues are uber expensive ($4000+ up), but between $2000-3000 is normal.

Is the breeder registered with the CKC? (Ours wasn't) Do they have a website? Do they keep in touch with owners that they've previously sold puppies to?

Oh, just remembered...haha! I'd also ask how often they have litters (ie: do they pump out litters several times a year just to make $$$?), and whether they've bred this particular sire/dam together before.

With our pups, it was the first time the breeder had put this particular male/female together, so you never know what you're going to get! Even when breeders take all of the necessary precautions, Mother Nature wins in the end. It's always a crapshoot. :)

Thank you guys for the tips. Very appreciated ! I finally choose to bought the left puppy and named her Sailor :).

zappam sorry I'm late to this, and wish I could have told you this before you bought one. They are cute pups, but in the pics they do not look that happy or healthy. Their ears should be up by now, one has droopy eyes, not normal for a Frenchie. I hope the one you bought is a healthy pup. There are some other genetic things going on, but not going to go there on here, it always brings up a heated discussion. Good luck with your pup, I hope it all works out for you.

You mean something along these lines? ;)

davidh Not implying anything and certainly not trying to start anything. Thought maybe I had figured out what you were referring to but guess I was wrong! My apologies!

Hello !

Here some updates and pics :

One week ago, we went to the vet with her and she said that she was too thin and she had a otitis :(. She also had some diarrhea problem but today she seems better after we gave her gastric food for 3 days and she already took 0.7 lbs ! She sitting at 7.2 lbs.

We really love her ! She seems to get more energetic days after days and she start to not crying at night ahah. She cry and whine about 30 minutes each time we put her to sleep and after each night exterior pooty :p. She still have one ear down, the one that have an otitis. Maybe it's the cause, maybe she using calcium for teething, don't know. Also, on the same side of her otitis (white side), she have an eye dropping that becoming more brown. Maybe the otitis it's also the cause. But, in general like I said she seems more and more energetic and happy :) ! She also eating everything she found sniffing including rocks. Someone have or already had this problem?

It's our first dog so if you have any advice, it will be appreciated !

But anyway here some pics of our Sailor!

Sailor is gorgeous!
My pup tries to eat everything. It's a hit or miss with frenchies. They get into everything or they don't [emoji13]

My puppies ears curled back while he was teething. Then perked back up even bigger!

Puppies are very curious and explore with their mouths. It is normal for them to put things in their mouths that a grown dog would have no interest in. Just make sure you don't have poisionous plants that he could get in to or any eletrical cords. Nylabones are good for teething puppies too. Hope his ear and diahrrea clear up soon. He is adorable!

When Mo was a puppy he constantly had rocks in his mouth. He did not eat them, just rolled and carried them. I was then concerned that he might break his little teeth.
That behaviour went away when he grew older. So it seems like a typical Frenchie thing :)

For teething we sliced carrots and put them in freezer and gave them to Mo as snacks. He liked to chew them and they cooled his itchy gums.

Hoping Sailor will get better soon!

@Titan, love the ears. He looks so perky ;)

Thank you for comments! And Blushy your frenchie is so nice too!

Sailor don't have diarrhea anymore, but her feces are still soft a little bit. We have her for now one week and I was wondering when she will start listening to us? I am not sure if she still know her name ahah. What is your guys experience with that? A lots of time I called her by her name and she doesnt move a bit. Maybe i am not patient and I need to give her more time :p

I also have a question about her toilet. Sometime she still doing her toilet in the house. Sometime right after we came from outside. She also doing it in her bed! What I do for now is that when I found her doing her toilet, I say "No"and bring her outside immediately. When I don't see her and she already did it, I bring her outside without saying anything. Is that a good approach? For the night, I wake up at 3:00 in the morning to go outside with her. Most of the time, she didnt already did any toilet on her room. But when I woke up at 7:00, she did a potty and pee. What I am suppose to do? Is it also only patience?

Lastly, I found myself going outside for her toilet alots, sometime 15-30 minutes interval because she sniffing etc... Is that ok or it goes against the logic that she will learn to do it outside if she always outside!?

Ahah a lots a question and thank you in advance for all your advices! You guys can post a picture of your frenchie too! I would love to see them!

Make sure to leash her, take her outside, tell her to go potty, and always walk her in the same area. When she goes tell her GOOD GIRL, make it a big deal that she was so good. Take her right back inside after she goes and you praise her. Some frenchies are just hard to potty train.

Also since she has an ear infection, has your vet mentioned anything about her hearing? My white frenchie is completely deaf. Maybe she's partially deaf, or the ear infection depending on the severity is causing hearing impairment? But other than that... Training frenchies can be really difficult. Stay consistent, and be patient :)
