Some ways of saving money on the probiotic if you find buying Fortiflora or similar dog probiotics or kefir yoghurt too expensive long term:
1) buy Primal Defense probiotic and add a capsule to a pint of organic milk if you can find, or just any homo milk otherwise( not ultra high temp pasteurized or filtered ) , and make a fresh batch every week that you keep in fridge
2) get some milk or water kefir grains, and make your own. You can get the grains from a local person ( used to be a list on yahoo ), or company such as "cultures for health". I used to give my dogs Probiotic Miracle, but lately have been giving them the grains or the water from water kefir to save money.
3) give a low fat probiotic yoghurt ( eg. Kirkland plain greek yoghurt )
Purina fortiflora only has enterococcus faecium, which is the most acid stable so most likely to survive the route down the intestinal tract. I think it's better to give multiple probiotic bacteria if you can.
I'm struggling with the same situation with my dog licking her paws, and ears with lots of wax, probably due to yeast and food allergies. I tried Orijen Six Fish for a while, but it didn't seem to help too much I don't want to go to raw dog food unless I have to.
You can buy generic povidone iodine liquid (=Betadine), don't buy the scrub, in pharmacies. It's a bit of a challenge getting your dog to sit in a bath or sink for 3 minutes. It might be easier to wash with Curaseb or Malaseb shampoo every couple days and rinse it off, and repeat that for a week or two.
