Normally I give Jax a couple pumps of salmon oil daily but I was at Trader Joe's over the weekend and grabbed a tin of sardines (in spring water) and gave him one last night with his food. So are sardines better than giving salmon oil? I assume he would not need both but I have no idea. Also, is 1 sardine a day too much? Is every other day better?

I got some duck eggs from my brother that I have been giving to Jax. On Saturday he got one raw in his kibble and on Sunday I scrambled one in coconut oil and put it in his kibble. Just wondering how many eggs a week would be good amount.

sardines ....:barf: :giggle: ..... sorry, even the word makes me ill --- I have no idea, but could not resist using the :barf:

I don't know what sort of sardines you bought, but I know they're typically prepared with a ton of salt. If they're fresh sardines, I imagine they couldn't hurt at all! If they're the kind that have been prepared, sardines may be more of an occasional treat... don't take my word for it though, I know next to nothing about them!

I never thought about that! They are not fresh/raw but in a tin. It said unsalted but I am sure there is still sodium. Ugh, just when I think I'm doing something beneficial for him...

My first thought was, whew, sardine & egg farts....Check the label, maybe they aren't too salty!

I just bought some organic sardines at the market today. Jake is on a grain free salmon diet and so I thought I would see how he liked a sardine. I checked the sodium and bought the one with the lowest and packed in water.

I picked some up today that are packed in water and no salt added. Hudson went NUTS for them.

What brand did you get? I was told about Season which I am going to get this weekend. Also packed in water with no salt added and they have way less sodium than the ones I got at Trader Joe's.

Trader joes brand. The unsalted ones in spring water. I wanted to try them out before I went all crazy finding the best brand, lol. Now I know that H loves them and actually eats his food when they're mixed in, so I'll try to find the better ones.

I almost barfed/died because they're so gross, but he hasn't stopped following me around and pawing at me since he got one.

I wonder if we got the sames ones. The ones I got are unsalted in spring water too, in a blue tin.

I opened the can, and went to pick one up and it broke apart in my fingers so it was easy to mix in with his food! The smell is strong but Jax seems to love them too. My BF won't touch them but my son will.

I think I decided on giving him one every other day.

I was at my favorite pet store today and they actually carry a frozen ground sardine food supplement. Sardines are the only ingredient and I think primal makes it.

I'll have to keep my eye out. I stocked up on the Season brand in water yesterday.

Does it come in a tube form? If so,I know what you're talking about. ;) They come in grinds, which are 100% sardine incl bone and organs and they come in a mix as well, which includes 15% organic vegetables :)

I love Primal, but if its the tubes you are talking about, let me give you a little heads up : It is double ground and is meant to be scoopable so it gets super mushy & since its raw fish it, well, smells like that :D Pretty strong lol

But other than that : Its great! And its pasteurized so you can always refreze left overs.
:)

Yes the tube one! And they have the one that's just sardines. Ugh lord I don't know if I can handle a worse smell than the canned ones. I almost die every time I have to get near it haha

lol,you may want to stay away from it then :D (at our store we actually get quite a bit of returns where the dog LOVED it,but the human just could not handle it :p )
But you never know. You can always give it a try. Good luck :D

If it's better for Hudson, I think I can handle it. Will probably just portion it out while frozen into baggies and then take out as needed and squeeze into food. Vs trying to touch it every time. Blech!!! Thank you for your warning!!

lol, no problem :)

But you're right,if you portion it and refreeze it, it shouldn't be too messy.

The things we do for our babies :p
