Hi guys, long time no talk!

This is Chowder's dad Tony.

Lsat night we rescued an 8 week chiuhauha mix female puppy. We had the initial introduction at the mom's house and we brought her to chowder's kingdom last night.

Initial meeting was good chowder was interested and sniffed around but wasnt too fixated or obsessed. We live in a 1 bd apartment so we have to keep her in the bathroom for now, till we figure out her setting. Chowder loves running around and coming up to her, however i cant get a read if thats him playing or being aggressive. He is obviously a smaller dog so she feels threatened and scared so she will bark and lash back. Do you guys have smaller dogs that you added to your pack? How was the transition? Is it safe to leave them separated *her in the bathroom and chowder gets the roam the house*

Also last thing. When chowder gets down to hte ground and lifts his butt in the air is that a sign of play or aggression? HE seems normal, just a little more energetic and on high alert. We only brought her home to help chowder feel better when he stays home alone. Hopefully they can get along and be good brother and sister.

thank you! *sorry for all the grammar errors didnt sleep much last night*

I call that move the "puppy play bow". It's not aggressive and is showing interest in playing with the new puppy. Congratulations! I haven't introduced another dog into my home as a permanent resident but others have come as a play date, most recently a Boston Terrier the same age as Radar, and they play non-stop. Some of the play looks really aggressive as Radar is a bulldog through and through and goes through instead of up or around but they both love it and love each other.

Thank you Mmclean.

only concern for me is that shes such a small dog and timid and chowder is very outgoing and doesnt know his own strength. THey would both run around and he would nudge her a little and have her flying. Haha i guess shes gonna grow up to be one tough little dog.

She is adorable!!! Congrats on the new family member!!

If his front is down on the ground and his butt is in the air he is just playing. Chihuahuas are tough little dogs so I think they will get along great once they get used to each other. I would definitely keep them separated when no one is home to supervise them until she's older.

oh no... my girlfriend just txted me and told me her friend came and visited our house. Chowder got super jealous and started pounding on the smaller/ new dog. Any way to fix this?

Chowder was probably showing off for the company, competing for attention. You could keep him on leash while company is there. Chowder most likely would not hurt the baby--usually if the baby yips or squeals, he will back off! Congratulations, your little girl is adorable!

My sister in law has a 6 lb chihuahua and she can handle my 2 frenchies pouncing her. They will eventually figure out their boundaries...

Even with one deaf dog mine are learning...

My older frenchie snapped at the deaf one yesterday for over stepping his boundaries and it freaked me out, but he definitely hasn't tried to cross that line again... So I'm sure your two will get the hang of being buddies!

Keep us updated!

Chowder is such a hunk!

We found a 3 week old kitten last summer and rescued her. She was tiny. At first I was nervous as to how Maple would react but they did fine. In the beginning Maple was a little rough but I watched her like a hawk and told her to be gentle. She got the hang of it pretty fast. Once the kitten got a little older they both started playing rougher, but they will let one another know, when one oversteps the line ;)

hi guys here is a quick update.

chower and stella seems to be doing better! here are some new questions i have for you guys.

1) Im feeling stella in her crate and chowder goes CRAZY! I know frenchies are crazy about food, but chowder is almost obsessed and goes crazy when he cant get to her food as well. How do i help him be at ease when shes eating? I always feed him first and make sure she sees that he is top priority.

2) Stella (the new dog) while playing with chowder nips and bites chowder in the face. Chowder is much bigger do i dont think it bugs him that much, should i step in and correct her? I think chowder is such a big baby that he wont correct her of her bad behavior.

3) should i get her, her own toys? chowder has several toys that he never used and i gave some to stell and of course chowder felt like it was his. So should i get her new toys?

Any help would be great , and also here are 2 videos of them playing please take a look and let me know how you think they are together.

*Never raised 2 dogs together so i want to make sure im helping chowder as much as i can.

too funny..... they are playing very well. I'd be very watchful since your new baby is so tiny, but they will correct each other if one goes too far. As for the toys, you can have two of the same exact toy and every time, they will both want the same exact one --- toddlers!

OMG, this is the most precious thing ever! That Stella is beautiful! Looks like Stella can hold her own and Chowder is being a very good boy. You can tell that Stella is not afraid of him and I think they know instinctually if a dog is a threat or aggressive. Doesn't appear to be the case with this kids. You did good reminding Chowder to play nice. They are going to be great company for each other.

When Stella is eating and Chowder is going crazy, I would say "leave it" or whatever you do to let him know he needs to de-escalate and disengage. He will learn that Stella's food is her own and she should be able to eat in peace.

I wouldn't feed him first. Id feed him last to let him know YOU are in charge, not Chowder or Stella.

Everything else will work itself out! [emoji4]

They seem to play very well together. I cannot see anything alarming in the videos, they sure are having fun :)

1) I don't use crates, but when feeding my two, I follow the Cesar's advise and I always let the older one eat first and step between the dogs to prevent the younger one to go to the bowl. When the older one is done eating, then I allow access to the younger one.
This is for the day meal. Moses, who is older only eats twice a day, but the younger eats 3 times. For other meals I keep the buys separated, at least for now :)

2) If the nipping isn't going too far, I would let it go as their way of playing. Chowder will most likely gently correct Stella if it gets too rough. Keep an eye on how it goes.

3) I agree with 2bullymama, no point really to get duplicates, unless you really want. They will definitely go for the one that the other one has.

Thank you for your input.

Chowder is SOOOO food motivated that i think he gets jealous when Stella gets any kind of food.

Right after shes done eating he will charge up and "CHECK" her like you done with your food? what'd you eat!? haha

Throughout the day theres one or two incidents of where chowder would play a little too rough, but we try to correct him and separate him.

We're having a trainer come by tomorrow to help us through with the process so i will keep you guys updated.

Thank you so much for your response. Chowder is a big baby himself so he doesnt really correct her. He out muscles her and takes over, however i dont think he gets aggresive or nip hard enough for her to understand shes doing something bad. I guess time will tell. Its been a week and so far nothing too crazy. We just hope that they will grow old to love one another :)

I correct myself on the feeding regime...If both of them are eating at the same time, the one who is in calm state of mind should get the food first. That will give the indication to the other one that, hey, if I'm calm I can get my food faster. :)

(just bought and read the book "Cesar's Way" and this specific issue was described there...so I will correct my actions accordingly and see if it goes even better!)

For the other things, I'm sure all will go just fine, as long as there is nothing too aggressive, things will most likely sort out by themselves. Based on the videos your fellas are doing great! :)

here's a new video.

CHowder and stella playing. If you see anything i should correct please let me know. Thank you !
