I was just wondering what supplements your Frenchie gets. Jax gets Forti Flora, a probiotic, in the morning which has pretty much eliminated all the tooting he used to do. Then he gets salmon oil at night. I know some people give coconut oil, any advantage to this that the salmon oil doesn't have?

I don't give any supplements. We feed a salmon based food which has the supplements already in the food. :) If we didn't feed the salmon food I would use the salmon oil as it's really great for the coat. But we feed this because all the dogs literally drool when it's meal time. Even after a year of feeding the same food they all dance and run to the door to the garage and then I have drips of drool on the floor I have to clean up from all the drool! It's funny. Even the baby who is eating the blue wilderness puppy chicken formula wants the SALMON. We will switch him to the salmon once he hits a year.

Here is some info on the food we feed.

I feed the blue brand because of all the great ingredients in it....Deboned Salmon, Chicken Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal (source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids), Peas, Tapioca Starch, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Flaxseed (source of Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids), Natural Chicken Flavor, Tomato Pomace (source of Lycopene), Potatoes, Alfalfa Meal, Potato Starch, Whole Carrots, Whole Sweet Potatoes, Blueberries, Cranberries, Apples, Blackberries, Pomegranate, Spinach, Pumpkin, Barley Grass, Dried Parsley, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, L-Carnitine, L-Lysine, Turmeric, Oil of Rosemary, Beta Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), d-Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Ascorbate (source of Vitamin C), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Choline Chloride, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Salt, Caramel, Potassium Chloride, Dried Yeast (source of Saccharomyces cerevisiae), Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, Dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation product, Dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product.

PLUS they have the The Health Benefits of LifeSource Bits

LifeSource Bits include ingredients that help benefit dogs and cats in three ways.

Help dogs and cats maintain a healthy oxidative balance

Virtually every day, our dogs and cats are exposed to environmental factors that can negatively impact their oxidative balance. And if their biological systems are not able to rebalance this oxidative stress, it can lead to cellular destruction and other serious health issues.

As antioxidants can play an important role in reducing oxidative stress, an increasing number of veterinarians are recognizing their importance in helping pets maintain a healthy oxidative balance. This is the science that led our nutritionists to formulate BLUE's LifeSource Bits with ingredients that are rich in antioxidants. These include:

Kelp
Vitamin E
Vitamin C
Beta Carotene
Vitamin A
Blueberries
Barley Grass
Help support a pet's immune system.

LifeSource Bits contain ingredients that help support a pet’s immune system:

Alfalfa
Flaxseed
Parsley
Vitamin C
Cranberries
Help support a pet’s specific life stage requirements.

LifeSource Bits also contain ingredients that can help protect a pet’s changing needs from youth through his mature years. These include:

Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids for healthy skin and coat
Yucca Schidigera Extract for joint health
Taurine for healthy eyes and heart
L-Lysine for growth and development
Vitamin D for healthy bones and tissue
Vitamin B12 for growth
L-Carnitine for endurance and fat metabolism
“Cold-Formed” Process

Recognized as a breakthrough in canine and feline health because of the multiple benefits they provide, LifeSource Bits are also a manufacturing breakthrough because they are “cold-formed” to preserve nutritional potency of the ingredients. BLUE is the ONLY brand of pet food to use this “cold-formed” process.

When you compare dog foods or compare cat foods, you will see that this “cold-formed” process is an important difference between BLUE and other brands that add antioxidants and vitamins. Other manufacturers process their foods with heat as high as 350°. High heat can destroy the potency of many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and important enzymes. It’s the same concept as when you cook vegetables at high heat—the longer you do, the more heat-sensitive nutrients are lost.

LifeSource Bits are manufactured separately at a lower temperature from the rest of our kibble to preserve greater potency of the vitamins and antioxidants. This way, your pet can gain as many benefits as possible from these valuable nutrients.

Water-soluble vitamins are the most sensitive to heat. Nutritionists estimate that these vitamins can lose a minimum of 30% of their potency when exposed to high temperatures, while some, like vitamin C, can lose up to 75% of their potency.

BLUE LifeSource Bits contain eight water-soluble vitamins which benefit most from the “cold-formed” process:

Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Vitamin B12
Vitamin C
Folic Acid B9
Niacin B3
Biotin B7
Pantothenic Acid B5

We give Bear a NuVet every day, as the breeder recommended it.
However, I am a bit of a skeptic and cannot help wondering if it is sheer 'snake oil'.
I will likely remove it from his diet when we run out of the tablets.

Otherwise, he eats Fromm dry/wet foods + fresh fruits, veggies and raw egg every now and then.
I think we're covered.

Update: He also grazes my lawn for me, so there's plenty of fresh greens and fiber. Lol!

I wouldn't give up on the nuvet at all, it's one if the best supplements out there. It's a great way to keep immune system boosted and helps keep the skin and coat nice, also has natural antihistamine (cats claw) as well as made in the USA. I've been using it 4 years and it's obvious when I run out. Plus I never have to go to the vet like.... Ever.

Thanks for the advice!

We give ours HardyPet Complete once a day. But the Frenchies only get half a pill a day. The English get whole one.

Holy long quote post! But Julie, I have a question. The vet recommended I switch from the natural instinct raw I was feeding Danté to the Blue Buffalo Grain Free Puppy food. Pink Bag. Anyway, as soon as I began to transition him... The gas was astronomical. Like out of control. And the stool smell? Wakes me up in the middle of the night. He got his stool sample back and has no parasites. Is batman clearing out your house on this food? Danté might clear out the neighborhood at this rate.

If you bought the 'small breed' bag it could be the protein content.

Why would you switch from raw to kibble?:w00t:
Vets usually are not nutritionist and only learn very little about nutrition during their university course. I would never listen to a vet about nutrition just because you dont go to your dentist to get advice on your flu.

If everything was fine on the instinct raw I would not transition him.Especially not to kibble.
What was the vets reasoning?

Hi,
I give nuvet, the breeder told me about it!
Also he's eating Fromm gold puppy

MaplesMommy the vet sent me a video and notes from a nutrition lecture he took with some well known dog nutritionist & told me to make the decision myself. He said in the vet world he sees a trend towards raw every five or six years, but the research just isn't there for him to comfortably agree that i continue to feed raw.
lkclark it is the grain free small breed puppy bag!! Ugggh, now what?!

Thought so! If you want to stick with that brand, you'll just need to switch over to the normal puppy food, which has less protein.

If kibble is your medium of choice, it is best to cap-out at around 25% protein, as bulldogs tend to get ferocious gas and loose stools at higher levels.
Brands such as Orijen might be good for a Norwegian Elkhound pulling sleighs, but perhaps not a frou-frou breed like ours. Lol.

If you're in the market for a good kibble food, however, I would recommend the Fromm Gold Puppy kibble.
Bear is just under 13 weeks old, and we're down to about 3 poops per day, and they almost always have good consistency and cut-off clean. (Lol @ 'puppy talk')
He also LOVES it. We mix in just a spoonful of their canned product, as well, and he eats his entire meal within 5 minutes.

Leo and Molly get a NuVet, they also get a probiotic 2-3 times a week and are on Fromm Grain Free (salmon for Molly and Pork-n-peas for Leo)...

No supplements for Bolt until he shows me he needs them. Just a good quality food should be good enough for a normal dog with no other issues.

@ FrenchieDante,

Yes Batty does SMELL something fierce at times and I do think it's due to the protein content. But, dogs need protein and high amounts of it. The wolves eat all protein in the wild. Our dogs need it. I deal with the smell. Yeah no fun, but I knew getting into this breed that they are GASSY. You might try the probotic. That was helping someone else on here with the gas. :) I really like the food and after going through 5 different foods with Oliver I won't change the boys. I like the Blue. It works for my family.

Jax used to be SUPER gassy, like he could literally clear the room. I always thought it was cute, other people not so much. But after he started the probiotic, the gas is almost non-existent. Just a couple toots here and there.

lkclark I use Forti Flora. I get it on Amazon for a little over $20 for a month's supply.
