Were you paranoid?! I'm freaking out, and my puppy doesn't come home for two weeks. I'm already giving my friends instructions.

-No touching the ground outdoors until his vaccinations are finished. Basically, Dante won't see the light of day until 16 weeks.
-No stuffies unsupervised. He might choke on the stuffed filling. Deer antlers only when left alone. But his teeth might break, so actually... none of those either.
-No going outside (after vaccinations are finished, of course) if it is over 70 degrees.
-No playing for longer than 15 minutes. If he pants, immediately stop playing and hose him down with cool water and cool rags.

Am I being over bearing? Is it really that serious? I am an anxious, paranoid person -- and I think i've selected the wrong breed. Panic disorders + frenchies = chaos. Please give me the low down, the real low down.

Alright, first of all calm down ! :) Its gonna be alright. But you really shouldnt bubble wrap him. Look at human kids. The ones that were never allowed to get dirty and climb ,run and fall are the most fragile down the road.
You really should NOT just leave him inside until he is done with the vaccines! That is actually more harmful than good! Puppies NEED to get exposed to all kinds of things when they are young ,otherwise they can develop fears and aggression towards certain things. Of course you shouldnt go to a busy dog park the week you get him and he hasnt been vaccinated but go out in your yard, have people come over, show him everything outside, let him experience birds, cars, bicycles ,running children in the neighbourhood. This is all important. He will still be protected by the antibodies from his moms milk so unless there is a huge Parvo or Distemper Risk in your area go out! Stay away from other dogs feces but thats it.
Also it is scientifically proven that a dog who get his first or second shot at 16 weeks or older is likely protected for a life time. And please, please stay away from unnecessary vaccines. Only Distemper and Parvo are important and try to vaccinate as late as possible. (Vaccinating at 7 weeks or younger is non sense since the dog is still protected by his moms antibodies).

I do agree on the stuffies though. Maple always rips them apart. I would only leave him alone with safe toys such as a Kong. Ropes toys can also be dangerous so Id stay away from these.

If he starts panting, let him pant. Stop playing or running, but dogs pant. Thats okay.bring him to a cooler spot, offer some water but dont panic. As long as its not super hot or he looks like he is in huge distress its absolutely fine.

You're absolutely right... I'm going to be doing more harm than good if I make him a "bubble dog". Kongs it is! And safe lawns are okay too. What about playdates with vaccinated dogs? Is that
Okay? Also... If Dante is panting in cool weather or indoors, should I be concerned? Is panting ever okay?

Dogs pant when they are nervous or stressed, too, not just hot. Nylabones, XL size are okay to leave them with, also.

I had a 5 lb miniature dachshund almost die from a Nylabone. I have never used one since and tell everyone I can about them!

I would be careful with antlers. Jax loves them but instead of just chewing on them, he was actually eating them until they were just little nubs. I have stopped giving them to him. He has never been a fan of Nylabones.

Our vet. has removed antler shards from dogs' intestines, too.

OK, just take each day at a time and the main thing is calm down and enjoy your baby. If you have a yard and have been there for over a year I wouldn't worry about letting him out in the yard. Going outside and enjoying the sunshine is good for them. They can play and they will pant and that's OK. If it's hot out, just limit the time to 5 to 10 minutes. It gets in the 90's and even 100 deg. F. here and they still go outside to do their business and right back in. We will let them play in the morning or late evening when it cools down some. We only give our babies Nylabones and Kongs to chew on. Buy the large or extra large Nylabones. I don't give mine deer antlers or any kind of antler, but have heard that Elk anlers are better and don't splinter as much as long as they are fairly fresh and not old and dried out. Frenchies are very social dogs and love to please their humans, and they are pretty smart too. So enjoy your baby and just enjoy him, they are awesome.

The breeder we got Pierce from did not let him outside at all. But she also said she was very protective of her litters, and wanted to make sure they were healthy when the owners took them home. We only allowed him in our yard until he was through with his vaccines. No walks before then, and definitely no trips to Petco or PetSmart. He is probably going to make his first trip to Petco today.
It has been really hot here lately, and we have found that Pierce will not play outside when it is too hot. Also, if he gets hot, he makes a beeline for the doggie door and his water bowl, then may come back outside. His other thing he will do is go to the water hose where he knows I will see him and turn the water on. He also has a cooling pad to lay on in the shade if he wants to be out on the porch with Schatzi.
I have a deer antler for him, his first, and he loves it. I am now looking online at the elk antlers. The online sources definitely have fresher ones than you get in the stores. He also loves his Kong. It took him a little while to figure it out, but now that he has, he really likes it.
Just enjoy your puppy. Be careful, but don't go overboard. That way you can both have a lot of fun.

Yes, I worry about the antlers and the bones too, I have heard the same thing. I ordered a "Bully Stick" this time in his Pet Box and he had it half gone in less than 5 mins so I took that away. He loves to chew and I can't decide what to give. Very worrisome since my NylaBone experience

Was it the edible type? I don't give those either. They do break. The nylabone galleleo (sp?) is a great one. I also like the wavy bone.

Bisou has been home with us for 7 months now and I'm still paranoid. It's all me - the dog is fine. But I worry about everything. I swear, she looks at me as I'm hovering over her and her eyes are saying, "Will you back off? Jeez, mom!" But I can't help it. I was in tears this morning as I discovered a terrible rash on her front leg. Took her to daycare at the vet's and they looked her over for me and told me it was just a common skin infection. But in my head it was mites, mange, or poison ivy and her leg was going to need to be amputated.

I guess my point is that all my worrying isn't doing a darn thing to help Bisou. Your dog will be fine. You will be fine. Invest in a winery or whatever your calming vice is. That way, you'll be boosting your retirement as you operate on freak-out mode as usual. These dogs seem pretty hardy.

We get the hard, not edible nylabones in XL. Buster is a chewer, too!

Oh no!!! May i ask what went wrong?
She had a Nylabone that we left in her toy basket for her to play with. She was 7 mos old. I came home from work and the bone was missing the knuckle and I asked my husband who came home first about it and he said he found it and threw it in the trash. I threw the whole thing out and never replaced it because it had fractured. About 1 yr later the dog became ill and was vomiting a dark green liquid which I assumed was liver bile. The vet x-rayed her and found nothing so he sent her home where she continued to vomit and I slept on the floor with her giving her 1 cc of water in a syringe every 15 minutes. After 3 more days of vomiting and her dropping weight to 2 lbs. the vet agreed to do exploratory surgery where he discovered a black pitted object that was the end of the Nylabone she had swallowed 1 yr earlier and my husband had lied to me about finding it so I wouldn't be all whacked out on him. I have no idea why that dog lived because she was very sick and after getting no sleep for a week so was I. I have never owned another Nylabone product. That was in 1984 or 85 and that Nylabone episode cost us about $2500 all together. That was a lot of money to me back then.

LOL edible? My dog eats everything. He can't have stuffed toys or anything nice. He's a chewer and I guess I should be thankful he only chews his stuff. He has bones, antlers and the 1 and only Bully Stick that I took away because he ate it so quickly. He eats his antlers to a nub as well. I have just run out of things to give him. He eats the bones too, not as quickly as the antlers. This dog is such a powerful chewer I would never trust a Nylabone after the experience I had with my dachshund. I used to raise dobermans and they couldn't hold a candle to this little Frenchie I have when it comes to chewing.

Advice on other toys for my Frenchie? Just kongs and antlers? And what size?

We have a puppy size kong and I usually buy medium antlers. They tend to like the split ones better that have the like marrow down the middle. We buy the elk ones. If you have a tj maxx/home goods or Marshall's I'd check there, mine are always getting antlers in and they're so much cheaper!

Forgot to add that Hudson also LOVES the Kong mini squeaker tennis balls. He carries them around constantly.

Read through the Thread comments. Most people are saying avoid the antlers. I also worry about them but I can't give my dog regular toys. He destroys everything. I do have 3 latex toys that he likes and can't destroy. I got one in a Pet Box and then looked online for the little "paw" logo they have on their side and ordered more. I think it's going to depend upon how powerful a chewer you got. My dog can't have chew ropes any soft toys so he is so limited. I see photos of other Frenchies that have toys they play with like ones I bought my boy and he ate in 10 seconds flat so it will just depend.
