Do you guys recommend that the dog actually vocalizes to come out of the crate to go outside and go to the bathroom?

I feel like he never barks, he loves his crate so much that I feel like he just relies on the schedule....therefore, I don't understand how the whole "let me know you have to go" aspect of housebreaking will fall into place?

He hasn't had any accidents in the crate, just a few piddles here and there outside the crate.

Both my current babies... Cheli and Lambeau do not bark to go out... Not trained that way, just how they are. Both will just go stand at top of basement stairs till we show up.... If we say 'potty' they go to the stairs. So, since neither vocalize-- we have to watch for stair time and the schedule

Radar doesn't bark either. He will go to the front door, which is tiled, and will shuffle around there to let me know he wants to go out.

Jax does not vocalize unless he really, really, really has to go. Normally he just goes to the top of the stairs which means he needs to go out.

buddy kindly stands by the dogs and scratches on it really loudly the second he wants to go lol !

Isabelle is 50/50 but she usually asks. She's vocal sometimes, sometimes she runs back and forth to the door and back to us in the living room. And like mentioned above, if you mention "potty" Isabelle will either bark or run to the back door.

Titan is more reliant on his schedule, but if he's in his crate he barks to let us know, if not he usually goes and stands by the back door and stares back at us like "uh hello?"

No, we do not wait for them to bark. Most of the time they will not bark anyway, they will just pee. So it's up to us to know when it's time to let them out. We have a schedule for them. If we have pups, then we take them out more often.

That answered my question! Thank you!

Yeah I do not wait for a verbal cue either. I just take Nellie out on schedule. After meals, after napping and after a heavy play session. She doesn't really let me know unless she's lying on the couch in which case she will try to get off or put her paw on me to take her out. Twice when i left her on the couch and was busy in the kitchen she did bark at me a few times which i ignored only to realize a minute later that she needed to pee and had decided to do it on the couch!! But thank goodness for waterproof furniture protectors. She is still young 5 months and is not house trained.

Potty bells have been the best thing we've ever done. We trained Fiona to ring them when she wants to go outside. It greatly minimized her accidents. She likes to go outside so sometimes she rings them when she wants to hang out outside. But for the most part, she has very few accidents inside. She is 5 months. She was spayed a week ago tomorrow and has had a few accidents right by the door but we attribute those to the surgery.

We have a pet door that leads to a fenced dog yard so they take themselves out when nature calls!

Our dogs come up to us and just stare at us when they want to be let out. Or when we get up to get something they will wait till your walking toward the door and run to it as a way of saying hey I need to go out there please!!

Glad I found this thread! Oslo doesn't make a peep either. He'll be 6 months soon. He will just go if I don't take him out often enough. It's very frustrating. I've always bell trained before, but he won't use it. So I just have a set schedule when to take him out. People say to watch him for when he starts sniffing, but Oslo is ALWAYS sniffing! Either for food or because the cat was just there. So that doesn't help. ;)
But it sounds like Oslo not making any noise can be a common thing with frenchies. Good to know.
