Hi- this is my first post on here but I currently have a 16 month old male frenchie named frank. We are thinking of getting him a friend. He had a sister who passed away about 5 months ago and since then he has been acting different. He is now chasing lights and watching tv. We believe it would do him good to add a sibling and friend. He goes to day care and gets along well there with all dogs. But on walks he can bark and he barks at visitors at our house. He doesn’t seem aggressive normally but I believe he is trying to protect us and his territory since his sister died. He use to not have any of those behaviors.

We are debating if we should get a male or female. Or if that even matters. Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject? And is another frenchie better than some other breed he might get along with? He seems to do better with bigger dogs as he plays tough! 😊🐶

Thanks.

Welcome! We'd love to see pictures of Frank!

Some people will say do a male/female combo. I have 2 males, my 4 year old Frenchie (Jax) and 1 year old English Bulldog (Louie). It took about 3 weeks before Jax would even go near Louie but I haven't had any major issues with having 2 males. Sometimes if Jax doesn't want to be bothered, he will let Louie know. Jax is definitely the alpha between the 2 of them.

Thanks for your reply! Good to hear. It seems like there really isn’t a good answer it depends on the dogs!

Here are some pics of Frank!

Wow, that's a good looking boy!

No suggestion on what sex to add, or whether to consider another breed.

Before Loki, we had two female Doberman's who got along well and then a male and female English Bull Terrier.

In each case the second dog was added a couple of years after obtaining the first.

Frank is a hunk! I hope you find the right companion for him.

One reason you might consider sticking with the same breed is that many Frenchies can't or shouldn't keep up with some of the more energetic or agile breeds.

I set Gus up on little play dates with some of my friend's dogs, and there was one time when I was actually a little concerned for Gus when he was playing chase with my friend's leggy Cockapoo. She is so agile and such a jumper and short legged dogs that are built like a brick shouldn't be doing all that jumping because it's not good for their backs. Plus, Frenchies get over heated so easily.

Just something to keep in mind.

Wow, Frank is gorg!!! His black muzzle if beautiful!

:luv:

:smileywelcome: to you and Frank!

We get male dogs because some females are such bitches!

Hello! I was recently in a similar predicament as you.. I had a 1.5 year old male frenchie - we wanted to find him a companion so we didn't feel as guilty when he was alone. I am happy to report 2 weeks ago we brought home a 15 week old cream frenchie! Thus far, things have been great. They are best friends and we have had absolutely no issues (knock on wood)..in fact I find the new pup has taken very quickly to potty training from watching his big brother!

Goodluck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Welcome! t totally depends on you as the leader which is best to get... male/female is always less of a chance of issues, but it depends on the personality of the dog as well as your ability to lea them.

It sounds like the your girl was the alpha between your two and your boy is looking for leadership hence the different behavior. He used to follow her lead and now does not know what to do. Based on this, just my opinion, I'd get another female and you should work with him ... 'nothing in life is free' to help him know you are his leader and get him back in balance.

Our Cheli got very depressed after Banks passed away, and his behavior became very different... barking, aggressive, snapping at other dogs. All those years with Banks, we never realized how much control she had over him until she was gone.

Thanks everyone! He is a fun dog to have! Keeps us entertained! Thanks for all the advice. Lots to think about !!!

Definitely get another frenchie. Not sure on gender yet, see both sides. Interesting point on how he is looking for someone to follow. Haven’t thought of that!! I do feel that he is trying to protect us more since she passed away.

In our house we have a 2 year old male pit mix, and a 1 year old doberman, both unfixed, and have never had any issues with the two boys :) We got our first frenchie a couple months ago, a girl, and she definitely runs the house now! Totally has to do with personality, but I think females are much more likely to be "bossy" and take over. Is your boy more on the submissive or dominant side?
