I apologize if I'm annoying with the new questions every day. This has just come up yesterday, actually. Danté is interested in nothing else but chewing (and eating a pooing). It's constantly. He chews his nylapuppy keychain mostly, and I'm not worried about my couches, posessions etc. because he's pretty good with "NO" & redirection (plus i'm due for new furniture anyway). I feel like all I say is NO these days. I wonder if it's boredom and I'm going out to grab him a crinkle toy and my mom suggested putting a few toys away for a few days and bringing them back out so they seem "new". I'm just wondering if this constant, obsessive chewing is normal? He will be 11 weeks tomorrow. I'm fully aware of puppy chewing... I raised a chocolate lab growing up. Hershey chewed everything in sight... Literally it was bad. Not to mention he ruined my favorite pair of sketchers when I was in seventh grade. Comparable to now, that'd be like Danté chewing up my Louis Vuitton. I'll never forget coming home to the back of my shoes gone. My mom confessed to me yesterday that she was actually actively trying to get rid of Hershey in his adolescent years. She was offering him for FREE to her co-workers. Long story short, Hershey ended up being the perfect dog up until his death at the age of 7 from bone cancer. He walked everywhere without having to be on leash and was the most loyal, obedient kind-souled dog I've ever known. He was so loved by my family, including my mom -- who is so happy she never found a re-home for that once bad puppy. I still have his picture framed in my living room... And I've been out of my parents house for years! Anyway.... Is this teething, boredom, anxiety? Hoping it's not anxiety... Because he does it in the midst of me playing and engaging with him. Literally, he'll be mid fetch and stop to chew the corner of the coffee table or the middle of his puppy pad. What the?! Help!!!

Ps. Feel like I have to include a picture of Hershey now. It's the one in the living room in a frame I made in 8th grade. Notice the stickers, LOL. Awww... RIP "Brown Dog" (his favorite nickname).

Love reading your stories! I for one never mind all the questions and posts. Give me a chance to brush off the cobwebs in my brain and use my training. :) Puppies chew and they do it for MANY reasons. Bordom can be one....but also teething which he is doing now, exploring his world, it smells good, it tastes good, it feels weird.....lots of reasons. I would not worry about the amout og chewing unless he is making his gums bleed which does happen when teething. Yes, during the first few months, you might find yourself saying NO and redirecting more than you say his name! It's normal and it's good that you are teaching manners now! It's the best time to begin setting the rules and structure for your home. Don't feel bad. Here's a trick. When you say NO and he stops whatever he is doing that was bad....PRAISE him to doing as you instructed! I alwasy tell my clients the dogs want to please you and will work to get your praise. So when you have to say no, be sure to PRAISE when they do as you ask and love them up! The praise is MORE important than the redirection beacuse they will work for the love too! They don't know what we want until we teach them. You are doing the right thing. Keep it up!

One thing I used on Jax when we first got him and he was chewing on everything was apple bitter spray. And it actually worked. I remember even spraying the bottoms of my pants with it because I would come home and Jax would grab onto my pants and pull and pull and pull. And ditto to everything else that Julie said.

Thanks Julie... You always reassure me. If this was anxiety or a boredom thing... Do you think he'd do it in the middle of playtime with me? I just ran out to buy him some new toys. He had interest for about 10 minutes.... Here's a funny video: http://instagram.com/p/qjxYAMR4qM/

He is so adorable!! Love that video :)

Bear loves to gather all of his stuffed animals in the middle of the living room and take turns attacking them. Lol.

I have to watch the video at lunch time......so excited to see Dante in action!!!! My boys leave all their toys under the dinning room table. It's the only rug we have down in the house right now so they like to lay there when I'm cooking or working on my computer. If I'm in the living room watching TV they are on my lap on the couch. LOL

Lol speaking of house movements...whenever Bear goes outside to pee or poop by himself, he comes back inside and walks up to the couch, giving me the 'please pick me up and put me up there' look. It's as if he thinks he deserves it after going potty. Lol.

LOL... Danté hoards the toys in his bed. Been doing this since the first five minutes he's been home. This chewing everything, all the time, can't stop, won't stop thing... That's new.

I've found that interactive toys really work well to distract Bisou from any "bad" behavior. She likes to be challenged. This has been a really great addition to the house. You hide the squirrels inside and the dog has to seek them out. Kind of hones their hunting skills as well.

I've been meaning to get one of those! So cute. I love the bee one!

Best $10 you can spend. The bee one would have been far more appropriate since we call her Bees. Dang, now I'm feeling like we missed the mark. Well, I'm sure these squirrels won't last much longer. We'll just switch them out then!

You can buy replacement bees and let them live in the log. Lol.

Brilliant! Best of both worlds. I like the way you think. And that picture of Bear cracks me up every single time I see it.

Just watched the video. He's sooooooo cute!!!! Love it.

We have the hide a squirrel too. Hudson loves them (though they look more like chipmunks to me!).

Hudson went through this stage too. Luckily he is respectful of no and it has subsided with time.

Does he have any chew toys? Fresh elk antlers were a godsend for us during this stage. He's never splintered or broken any so I feel comfortable with them (he's not a super strong chewer). He was never super interested in other toys.

I've been wanting an interactive toy for Jax. What is the name and where did you get it?

Kyjen Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle Toy for Dogs - $8.49 on amazon. You can buy replacement squirrels if Jax gets a little too rough with them. And they have a bee version as well. It seems like something that simple couldn't possibly entertain a dog for very long, but it does. At least in our house it does. Good luck!

I downloaded an app on the iPad for him to play with (which he absolutely loves) but he gets a little rough with it and I am scared he is going to crack the screen with his claws so I have to limit his time on it. I am definitely going to look for this one. Thanks!

He has a Nylabone, the nylabone puppy key ring, a kong, a durable strong chew stuffy, a scrunchy crunchy cow, a scrunchy bone, a kong ball.... The list goes on. It's like overnight he learned to roll his eyes at the petty things i've tried to entertain him with!!
