Just had wonderful experience with Wyatt playing with our neighbors dog in our yard. Temp outside was in the high 50's and they had a great time. My big concern is that Wyatt started panting almost immediately because of excitement. Then he panted later so badly because of getting overheated. It took 30 minutes for the panting to stop. I cooled him off with water on the paws, his back, belly and neck. The panting was so severe I was afraid he would have a heart attack. I used a cooling towel on him that I bought at the baby store too. Has anyone bought a cooling mat and if so, what is the brand and does it help with overheating?

Worried......

I have not used a cooling mat, but upper 50s is a good temp. for dogs playing. Has Wyatt been checked for an elongated palate or other breathing problem (nostrils)? Maybe he should be limited to 10 minutes of hard play, then rest before playing again.

I have a Playapup one. Works great! I bought mine on amazon.

You can get a small thin piece of leftover granite or marble and put it in the fridge. Then when it gets crazy hot you just take it out and lay it on the floor, most dogs will find their way to it. Easy to clean and you don't have to worry about filling something with water or plugging anything in. The stone will hold a cold temp for a decent amount of time.

We used to have chinchillas we did that for as they are also an animal prone to overheating :)

Coolaroos work pretty well. We also use the cooling towels, but have never bought the pads.

I bought a K&H cool pad for Norm. It works great. I put it in the freezer and pull it out when I need it. I throw a blanket over it and Norm will lay on it. Once it gets really hot this summer I'll fill up the baby pool and he takes a dip in there when he gets warm.

Wyatt had his palate and nares done when he was neutered. I think he just gets so excited and it was too long of a playtime. I am going to shorten the time to 10 minutes. He was running and wanted the other dog to chase him. Plus it was around noon in the sun. Still going to look for a cooling mat based on some of the suggestions as this was way over the top panting. Thanks for your help and advice!!
