Coughing for almost 2 months. No sign of letting up.

Our little pup has had a bad hacking cough for about 2 months and we're really unsure what to do.

We got our little puppy, Bean, on February 9th when she was around 10 weeks old. We took her to the vet shortly thereafter and received her oral Bordetella vaccine. That evening I noticed she had a little bit of a cough but didn't think much of it. Over the next two days it seemed to get worse so I took her back to the vet and showed her a video of her coughing. The vet thought it might be kennel cough (possibly she had it from the breeder's? maybe the vaccine triggered it?) so she put her on oral antibiotics (doxycycline) and sent her home.

She seemed to do a bit better on antibiotics but then started to get worse again so we extended the course for another week. One afternoon she had a pretty bad coughing fit and started spitting up white mucous and seemed to be having labored breathing. I took her to a different vet who did x-rays and said she had pneumonia. We put her on a different antibiotic, Clavimox (sp?), but after a week on that with no signs of improvement she had yet another bad coughing fit and seemed to be having labored breathing again.

We took her to the ER where they did another x-ray, said she still looked like she had pretty bad pneumonia, and gave her IV antibiotics and put her in an oxygen crate. We spoke with the breeder who offered to take her to her vet and help cover the costs. We accepted and met with her vet the next day. Her vet gave another injection of IV antibiotics and changed her over to azithromycin. The breeder offered to hold on to her until she was better since she has an oxygen crate and nebulizer she can use.

She's stayed with the breeder for the entirety of this month and we just got her back yesterday. Unfortunately her cough seems essentially the same. When she drinks water she pretty much always follows it up with a wet sounding, gagging/hacking cough. It also happens whenever she wakes up. Throughout the night she'll do the hacking cough thing a number of times. The breeder said she's really not sure what's causing it and hasn't seen anything like this before.

Because she's so young I'm wondering if she has a hypoplastic trachea or some other genetic issue that's causing the cough to persist. Really not sure what to do at this point. Any advice y'all might have is very appreciated, thank you!

Couldn’t be an allergy thing could it?

I'm not sure. Her xrays from two different vets both showed pneumonia. Perhaps that was triggered by the allergies?
Her cough sounds especially wet, as if she has stuff in her chest that she's trying to bring up.

Such an emotional hardship going through all this, I think the breeder should take over Bean’s care and treatment.

I am sorry you are going through this and wish the best for you and Bean. The claim by breeder that his/her vet is specialist for this issue sounds highly dubious.

I’d get a specialist to exam... but know pneumonia can be difficult to rid of at such a young age and most likely is still there at some level.

Lots of positive thoughts and prayers to you all

Hello, did you ever get a definite diagnosis on Bean? I know this thread is old but I never saw a follow up and curious cause my 8 month old is doing the same thing.
