Hello everyone!
I am new to the forum and I am so glad I have found y'all. :)
Our family is planning on adding a puppy to it. We have literally researched for years and have finally narrowed it down...
French or English bulldog???
I realize I am on a frenchie board so you may be a bit biased...but I also have noticed several of you have both. I thought maybe you could give me your opinions, pros/cons of each breed.
We are a family with three children. (ages 7, 4 and 2) So good with kids is a must...which everything I read says both breeds are fabulous with children.
Anyway, any info or insight would be much appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

I have both... and yes, both are fantastic with childern, but it does also depend on how the pup is socialized and trained.

I have had two English for puppy age.... and they are wonder, lots of health issues different for each though. My boy had all the breathing issues, but was very healthy otherwise. He past at age of 7, we do not know the exact casue as we opted not to do the necropsy, but out vet believes it to have been an issue with his heart. Our girl is now 9 yrs old, and still apuppy in her mond. She is in very good health outside of arthitis in her spine which we manage with meds... nothing stops her. She has always adored children form the day we got her and she still does, LOVES them to pieces and knows how to play with them.

We also have our Frenchie... Cheli.... he is a ball of energy and what a personality. He had some health issue when we adopted him, but he now is in great shape. He also had all the same breathing issues as our male EB so they both had to have the palate/nares surgery completed, but our girl did not need them.

My point.... it all depends on the pup with many factors, but you just as much from a training standpoiint. They are all different, personality, health, etc.

best of luck in your search

Thank you so much for your insight. I really appreciate you taking the time to share.
You are making me want to say what my husband and I keep saying..."You can't go wrong!" There is no wrong or right choice...they are both great!! :)

From what I've seen ... frenchies are more energetic and playful -- they have a bit more stamina. Temperment in both breeds is great, but all depends on how well they were socialized. Of course there is a size difference... You're able to pick up a frenchie more easily than an english. Frenchie's are a bit less slobbery.

All excellent points...thank you!
The one concern I had with the english was the stamina. With three little kids...they want to PLAY! What a bummer if your dog won't play with you. HA!
Thank you so much!!

From my owning a frenchie, and a close friend of mine owning an English, size, slobber are the differences.

Their English had a horrible heart murmur and he passed away at only 3, I witnessed him at 2 years old pass out & fall down a flight of stairs. My friends little sister was 8 at the time and it took about 4 hours to calm her down after something so scary for all of us to witness.

But that is a risk with any dog. Even frenchies.

But since you have 3 small kids, make sure you get an extra health check.

How sad and scary. Poor puppy and child!!!

Great advice, thank you!!!!
I really appreciate it.

How about both? I just have a Frenchie but would love to get an English one day as well.

In terms of EB or FB, I would recommend you go with your gut. If you are planning to get your pup from a breeder, then I would research and go visit breeders of each if you can. Your heart will tell you and hopefully a puppy will pick you to be his/her fur-ever family!:)

Facts. English are 50-70lbs. Frenchies 15-28lbs. English are lower energy typically and Frenchie tend to be slightly more playful since they are not as heavy. Frenchies eat less. Due to weighing less frenchies tend to have fewer health issues than the english. Less wrinkles on the frenchie are easier to clean. But English puppies are so cute! Not then frenchie pups aren't.

Thank you so much, everyone!!
After much thought, discussion and EXCELLENT feedback from y'all, my husband and I have decided on the Frenchie.
Now....finding a reputable breeder in our area.... ;)

thanks again!!!

Frenchie FTW [emoji322] *and the crowd goes wild*

Just browsing this forum, how could you not choose these little cuties?!

Good luck on your search for a breeder!

I think both are adorable. I have always wanted an English, but never got one because of the size. A few years back I saw Frenchies and I've been in love ever since. I don't have one yet, but one day I will.

You definitely will fall in love with the frenchie breed. Having grown up with larger breeds I never imagined myself with such a small breed. After much research and the fact that my fiancé and I live in a small apartment we decided on our frenchie. She has a huge personality and reminds me of my parents boxer but in a compact package. Just be sure to socialize and be firm in training your puppy and they will grow into a great little member of your family. With 3 kids I'm sure they will love chasing a frenchie around and the dog will love it as well. We love our lil bundle of energy. Good luck in your search!

Frenchies are half the weight of the English so have more energy. Frenchies have less wrinkles so don't have as many chronic skin infections and odors. They live longer due to lower weight stress on bones and I live the bunny ears. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1413406946.504166.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1413406960.502654.jpg

Those are 2 that I looked at for years and I have "friends" that have both and they seem to all have the same health issues. The Frenchie weighs less and that was a plus for me in house breaking because I use the "Taxi" method and going down our back stair in the winter was tough once he was over 20lbs. The biggest advantage I see to the French Bulldog is that they don't drool :-D

I don't know about the drool part. Radar is a champion drooler, he can even do drool bubbles on either side of his face.

In puppy class Wally was known as Bubbles because of his drool bubbles on his mouth. :D He drools only when he's anxious or waiting for food.

Welcome to FBN. I have had English Bulldogs since the 1980's, Ruggles being my 6th and last. They are adorable, mellow, kid loving dogs, but they are heart breakers, too because of their health problems and relative short lifespan. Take a look at Olde English Bulldogges. That's what we thought we were getting when we got Buster who ended up being half OEB and half French Bulldog. Honestly, he is a wonderful blend. When Ruggles passes we will try to find another "blended" Bulldog and if none are available to us we will go with a Frenchie! They shed less, no drool or slobber, and have excellent temperaments!
