Not sure the is the right place to pose this question, but am wondering whether anyone out there has an experience owning both a french and a german shepherd and how well do they get along? A good friend of my brother's has to leave the country in a few weeks for good and is looking for a loving home for his 10 yr old German Shepherd and labrador mix. He is very desperate and has asked if i could take him over. His name is samba and he seems well behaved and lovely. He sheds a bit more than i'd like but i guess i can handle that. My only concern is upon meeting Nellie (my frenchie), he seemed bother and annoyed by her. Granted she is a puppy and gets excited around humans and dogs alike, i'm afraid that if she keeps bothering him, he might lash out at her. About a week ago when i was at the Vet will Nellie, he told me the two breeds i should be wary of around my frenchie is german shepherds and rottweilers. Apparently they don't show much outward but can pounce and attack smaller dogs at anytime. During their first meeting, Simba growled, snared and barked at Nellie anytime she wanted to jump up on him or play. I feel sorry for his owner because he seems to have no other options right now, but i don't also want to put my Nellie in danger.

Any ideas if its possible for the two of them to co-exist given the age and breed difference?

My only experience with this was on vacation. I was walking Titan on the boardwalk (mind you he's deaf and was only 8 months old), and a HUGE German Shepard pulled his (also buff manly) owner over to Titan and I.

Naturally I'm not a person who goes into panic mode. So I let the dogs do their thing. Titan put his ears back and let his German Shepard sniff all over him (which looked a bit aggressive for my liking but he was a young German Shepard as well) and once he was done sniffing, Titan sniffed him a bit and they were both completely uninterested in eachother.

We also have a German Shepherd! He's a loving dude but he's 10+ and cranky. He does NOT like Ella, but ironically he'll look out for her. His best friend is a 10lb. Chihuahua however - Go figure.

I've never left them alone with Ell after the Shephard tried to put her head in his mouth one time, lol. Not funny but I guess now it is!

It all depends on the owners and how the dog, regardless of breed, socialized them. My sister has always had GSD and all my bulldogs have done great with them. Her Pug, that is another story

Be VERY careful with this!

Thats exactly what it seems like. This GSD is cranky and overtime Nellie comes close to him he move away from her and if she persists than he starts to snare, bark and snap at her. I don't know if i'll feel confident leaving them alone together. He can have her for lunch.

Our Buster is all about play and we could not house a dog that wouldn't play.

I would never leave them alone together, especially since the GSD is growling at Nellie. Sounds like the GSD has been an only dog and may never tolerate a younger dog. I would be very careful.

Yes he's been an only dog for 10.5 yrs. so I don't they will get along. I feel bad because the owner is really desperate but it's not a right fit. I truly hope he finds a forever home for him.

I would be very cautious. He is older and doesn't seem to be interested in wanting to get to know your frenchie. Are there any rescue organizations where you are that could help out?

Yes so I decided not to take him. His current owners last resort is a rescue recommended to him by a family member. I'm sure they can find him a happy and forever home. I just don't trust them together. Just yesterday when I was taking Nellie on her evening walk, an 8 yr old bichon frise lashed out at her and tried to bite. Luckily I pulled her away quickly. His owner apologized. I don't want to be anxious with her and other dogs, but it's the reality. Not every dog likes puppies or frenchies. So far only my neighbors beautiful golden lab seems to let her be playful around him.

Good choice. It sounds like this dog needs to be an only dog.

It's odd but the dogs that seem to dislike Wally are mostly shepherds. I guess they don't like his pushy ways.
