So, Ripley had her spay and nares done and is recovering well from that. However, the vet told me that they have reason to believe that she may actually be a hermaphrodite. She had her female organs but had what could be a penis internally. They said it shouldn't cause her any issues down the road other than potentially adopting "male" behavior. I'm still kind of in shock. The vet had never seen anything like it before. I honestly don't even know what to think. Anyways, I guess the main thing is she's recovering well. :eek:hmy:

Hmmm; I think without testicles, she wouldn't exhibit any negative behaviors associated with an unneutered male. She looks more delicate like a female.

How are her nares healing? Can you send pics? We have been considering having Bambi's nares done but my husband really doesn't want to. Do you notice a difference in her breathing? Glad it's over.

So good to hear she di well and is beginning her recovery.

I know someone that has a Bulldog that is a hermaphrodite... you'd never know if you weren't told, there is no signs or behavior issues at all. BTW, his name is 'Hershey'.. get it?

Glad Ripley is healing well. I've most definitely heard of hermaphrodite (I wonder if dogs prefer the term intersex, heh) dogs before. Although, I think it's mostly been internal testicles, not a penis. I'm sure you've always known she was special. :)

Keep us updated on her recovery.

Frenchie Grrrl - You know, I had the same question about terminology because "hermaphrodite" seemed politically incorrect, but it's the term the vet used so I'll stick with it!

The vet asked about her behavior, whether she marked or humped or any more stereotypically male behaviors, and she does none of that. She said there was tissue that could be testicular or penile. They are sending it out for testing to confirm, but if it's testicular we'll likely have to have her get surgery again as it can put her at high risk for prostate cancer. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

She's still our sweet girl, and yes we've always known she was special, though not quite like this!

She seems to be healing just fine from her procedures though!
Mavis - I'll get a pic for you tomorrow. She's a little swollen but her nares look awesome!
2bullymama - Great name! I'm glad to hear that you couldn't tell she was hermaphroditic, not because I'm embarrassed but more so I just want her to live as normally as possible!

I have not heard of that in dogs, but why not? It is more common than most people think in humans.

I'm glad she is healing well from her surgeries!

Glad to hear about the successful procedures. We knew Ripley could whup anything "Alien" happening to her body. (I know, it's a stretch but the best I could do!!) :)
I have never heard of a dog being a Hermaphrodite...live and learn!!
