Hi all,

Lola currently is 5 months and I noticed about 3 days ago that she has been itching her ears much more. Last night she woke up with itchy ears and kept at it. We've tried to clean them out with a cotton ball and a bit of water but not much comes out. Looking inside they are also not dirty.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Which food do you have her on? 4-6 months of age is when they start getting allergies. You can try switching to something less allergenic, eg if she is on chicken and grains, switch to her a different protein and grain free. If she is already on a different protein and grain free, try a limited ingredient dog food such as Acana Singles line. Or you can try switching her to dehydrated raw eg. Honest Kitchen, OnlyNatural EasyRaw, Spot Farms.

You can clean ears with a baby wipe with or without some witch hazel on it, or wet a round cosmetic pad with a solution of 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 2/3 witch hazel, but no point if they are not dirty. If they are dirty and smelly, try using a commercial product like Zymox otic or EcoEars.

We were on Orijen Puppy and switched yesterday to Orijen Tundra. The ear problem started before the switch and the new food has no chicken. I cleaned out her ears with the witch hazel and she slept through the night last night. We will see how it progresses. Thanks for the help.

That's good you switched since she probably was getting allergic to the chicken in the Orijen Puppy.

yep --- witch hazel and try to avoid chicken and white potatoes...

So her ears still have not gotten better. I thought they stopped but it seems that now it only happens at night. She's been on the new food a week now, how long before we know if this will help? We've cleaned out her ears everyday with the witch hazel.

Are they any drops that will take away the itch? When it starts she goes crazy trying to relieve the itch. We feel terrible not being able to help.

Try Zymox otic drops with 1% hydrocortisone ( from Amazon ) . https://www.amazon.com/Pet-King-Brands-Treatment-Hydrocortisone/dp/B0025YOJXS

You fill up ear with the fluid daily ( no need to clean ear first ) , don't allow your dog to move until you've squished it around with your fingers from the outside, since as soon as you let them go they will fling their head around. Do this daily for about 7-10 days, then weekly as maintenance

If she's not better in a couple more weeks, I would try switching to dehydrated raw or frozen raw dog food. Or if you are really opposed to raw, a limited ingredient kibble such as Zignature or Acana singles or Earthborne Holistics Venture limited ingredient

I totally agree with Honeys Owners

After giving her the ear drops for 7 days, it has gone away. Her ears do still get dirty, especially the right one but we just clean it out with witch hazel. We are just glad shes not itchy anymore.

Great news ! It wouldn't hurt to flush her ears out once in a while with the Zymox to prevent infection. My dog has one ear flopped down due to nerve damage from a dog fight before I got her and it always relapses if I don't maintain it. It is a lot better though since I switched to frozen raw.
