Did anyone watch Judge Judy today? It was a case of two frenchie breeders in CA. The stud and bitch that were there were obviously designer colors (brown with light brown chest and eyebrows). I found it interesting because the dispute was about DNA, not for lineage but for color.

The stud's owner got pick of litter from the bitch owner. Of course, she wanted a female. The best "pick" carried a specific gene for the color of the two dogs (brown/tan). The puppy she wound up with didn't have the gene so she was suing for breach of contract. Sounds like the designer puppies were going for $10K. Sweetie pie Bambi was a bargain at $600!!! We adopted her as a retired breeder. Every day she pays us in spades. She is priceless.

Oh I wish I would have seen that. I wonder where in California they were. I know Stella is a "designer" color and we had our initial issues with health concerns, but I can't imagine life without her now. I trusted my breeder because Stella was the 5th dog I had purchased from her over the past 20 years and we never had an issue. She is AKC registered and came with a health warranty. I saw both the sire and the dam too. It just concerns me that backyard breeders will see $$$ signs and breed rare colors to fetch a hefty amount of money with a complete lack of concern for the health and temperment of the pups:(

These people seemed pretty legit. Although this was a money-making venture for them, they seemed to genuinely care for their dogs and take good care of them in every respect.

10K??? In U.S. dollars??? WOW!! Some people are nuts.

I didn't see the program, but I'm glad to hear the breeders seemed interested in breeding healthy pups. Most health problems don't surface until the pup is over 2 years old, so the breeders health guarantee wouldn't cover. We got a Frenchie calendar from the AKC and were very surprised to see a blue Frenchie pictured for January.

Yup; you can see why a lot of people go into breeding and why the DNA made such a difference to the woman who was suing.

I didn't see it, but glad I didn't. I despise these unethical breeders.

Wow I never saw that! Sounds very interesting. Did she win the case? How much was she given if so?

She did not win the case, only because her contract with the other guy specified pick of the litter only and nothing about whether or not the dog had a specific color chromosone. She found that out that her dog did not have the gene after the fact. She wound up getting no compensation. Both she and the defendant brought in their dogs and had them on their tables. They were a very unusual color; I've never seen it before. They were a medium brown with tan chest and tan spots above their eyes, kind of like brown Doberman markings. Definitely wasn't a frenchie color.
