New puppy anal glands

Hi all! We finally pulled the trigger on getting a second girl and we love her so much but we were not fully ready for the puppy chaos that comes with a 10 week old minion. She was having blood in her stool and her belly was very distended. After a trip to the vet, another 2 trips to the ER, another round of de-worming, some probiotics, and some prescription soft food (Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Puppy)she's much better and growing like crazy.
My biggest concern right now is she still occasionally has bloody stools, really weird breath, and randomly smells like anal gland liquid eww
She's way too tiny for expressing her glands and I prefer to look at diet before resorting to that.
Has anyone experienced something like this? I'm taking her to the vet next week but am wondering if there's anything I should be doing in the meantime.

It can definitely be the food, those prescription foods are good for short term but not long term. Look into a single protein quality kibble… open farm, Zingnature, Acana, Farmina… avoid chicken and potatoes.

Add a small amount of pure canned pumpkin (not pie filling) to each meal.. it helps with stool formation.

Also if still bloody poo.. ask vet to test for giardia and coccida. Sometimes they don’t test for those things unless you request it.

In addition to the quality kibble that 2bullymama suggested, you may want to supplement half her kibble with a hamburger and rice mixture until her gastro tract settles down. I do the 90% hamburger and boil it to get rid of all the fat. Mix that with white rice in a 25/75 ratio. She'll love it and it is very bland and hopefully will help to calm her GI tract. We feed quality dry kibble mixed with a little Raised Right frozen (thawed, obviously), and a couple teaspoons of quality canned (lamb, venison, beef, turkey, pork - no chicken). I think she will start feeling better soon. Who knows what the breeder fed, and she may have picked up a parasite along the way. I'm sure you'll get it under control soon. Big transition and stress going from the breeder to a new home.

We got our Jellybear (Jelly), at ten weeks old. OMG, nothing cuter than a frenchie puppy, as you're finding out. Puppies are a lot, but she's got to release all that baby energy - and then sleep! Enjoy this special time and take lots of pics! Best to you all!

UGH Yes I really dislike rx foods. My big girl eat Zignature mixed with Small Batch dog patties and I was hoping to transition the puppy to something similar but I'm not sure if she's too little for raw yet. I will definitely try the pumpkin. They tested her for Parvo and Giardia and was clear thank goodness. Thank you for the input!

Thank you! My phone is definitely full of pics already. You're completely right. The breeder told us they were feeding her Purina puppy and gave us an unmarked bag with some of the kibble. When I press them to send me a picture of the bag so that I could buy some more for the transition, they finally fessed up and admitted they've been feeding her regular cheap Purina, not even the puppy stuff. They claimed to have dewormed her, but after that incident, I didn't really trust them so we had to give her another round of dewormer.

Hi there, i just wanted to share my tips on what i know about anal glands with my baby. My 4 year old frenchie needed his anal glands extracted twice when he was about 2-2.5 years. I was feeding him kangeroo that you could get from woolies (pet food) and i suspected that it was the kangeroo and after stopping it, it hadn't come back since. It could be a high chance of something in her diet! I hope this helps

I know you have probably posted your formula/process more than you can count, but could you share how you do it and with what? Do you cook once a week/month? and freeze? Do they eat 2xday? How much? Thank you. I don't know if I have it in me to do that.

I buy from a local source, it comes in one pound bags that are delivered to my home frozen. I thaw 4-5 bags for the week in the fridge and the boys are feed twice a day. Cheli gets 1/3 cup at each meal and Cubby gets just under a 1/3 of a cup.

This is where I buy now... Healthier Alternative Pet Diet. The food is balanced meat/organ/bone with some fruit/veggies and oats. I've been using this food since 2007.
