Came home from running errands today and found a note on the counter that my husband had taken Bambi to the emergency vet. We went out with friends last night and she was "off," in that she didn't come down the two little stairs to rush them like she normally does. Stood on in the other room and just watched them. Then this morning my husband had her on the bed and as she was making a "nest," he said she just made this ungodly cry and he took her in immediately. Turns out she slipped a disc in her neck and is now confined to her crate for 4-6 weeks like Jax and Titan. She can't lift her head to look up, and she rotates her whole body to look around instead of turning her head. Luckily, that seems to be it and I am praying that it is a mild case. They prescribed gabapentin, trazadone and miloxican that we start tonight with dinner. I hope she will eat because she hasn't wanted any cheese or ham that we have tried to give her. The vet also gave her a shot of something and she is resting in her crate now. I am so thankful that she is crate trained. I'd be a wreck if she hated to be in there. I hope so much that she isn't in pain but she is such a good girl that it is hard to tell. It is horrible when they are sick. Even though we will be careful, I pray that she will recover soon.

Oh no!!! Exactly what happened with Jax. Jax does have IVDD and definitely needed surgery to repair the herniated disc in his neck. An X-ray didn't show this, had to do an MRI. It is possible crate rest alone will help but know it will probably always be an issue without surgery. Jax has 2 more weeks of crate rest and it has been hell.

Sending healing vibes to Bambi! And since I literally just went through this, let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks, everyone.

It's hard to tell how she is doing. She is such a good girl. As far as I can tell, her neck seems good. We are keeping her confined to the kitchen with her crate. She is not one to run around in there or jump. The thing that is worrying me now is that she hasn't been eating, is vomiting and has terrible diahreah (sp?), although really nothing in her stomach (?). It is very mucousy out of both ends(sorry), so I know her stomach and bowels have got to be so inflamed by the medicine. She was only on it two days before we stopped it. We have taken her off of everything and John is calling the vet this morning to see about something to calm insides. She has not interest in food. I want to resort to giving her some egg whites just so she will eat something, but I am afraid it is going to come back out immediately. In spite of it, she is still such a cheerful little angel.

Jax was on Gabapentin and Trazadone as well as codeine. He didn't seem to have any issues with any of the medications (thankfully). Definitely sounds like a call to the vet is warranted. If you wanted to try something natural to help with the digestive system, you can use slippery elm powder. I believe the dosage is 1/4 teaspoon per every 10 pounds. I use whenever either of my boys is "off."

I'm glad she doesn't seem to be in pain anymore so hopefully you get her digestive issues back on track. Keep is posted!

Cbrugs, thank you. Bambi is doing very well. Luckily, I think she had a mild case of IVDD. We are keeping her confined pretty much but had to take her off the meds because of excessive vomiting, diahreah and not eating. That prompted another trip to the emergency vet last week, but they were able to rehydrate her and give us meds to stop all the other. She seems back to normal now. We are just being really careful.

How is Jax?

Glad to hear she is feeling better!! Jax just got done with his 6 weeks of crate rest. We are supposed to minimize his stair use and jumping on/off the couch which has been a challenge. I bought little stairs for both couches but he's so used to jumping on and off, he's not using them. So we're working on that and hopefully he will catch on. But I'm definitely paranoid over another recurrence. After his surgery I had asked the neurologist what grade of IVDD he had. She said before surgery he was a grade 1 and after surgery he became a grade 0. But I'm still paranoid.

I don't know where you live by if have access to CBD hemp oil, that might be a good option to try for Bambi. I got some for Jax and it helped calm him. It's good for other things too.

Thank you! We are in Western NY. I will look for the hemp oil. Do you mean that is to help calm their intestinal tract/stomach issues?

I am so glad that Jax is fully recuperated. I know the feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop, especially when they are jumping on and off of stuff. Their recoveries can be so long and uncertain that they will be 100%, I think that is why we worry.

It can help with digestive issues as well as pain and other things. Here is a good article Cannabis For Your Dog: How It Can Help - Dogs Naturally Magazine

There will always be a chance for a recurrence so I'm trying to minimize some of his activity which is hard cause he's a dog and he wants to act like a dog! He doesn't understand that he needs to be careful and that makes it so hard.
