Sore spots and loss of hair...we have been trying everything over these past months for our boy Barley...including switching food and vets and even a dermatologist. With all the change and medication he is getting much worse...see pics:

He is not scratching or licking and seems to be his normal playful self...or just bullish and pushing through...but we can't seem to slow this down.

Recommendations...please!!!

Note...the square patch is where he was checked for allergies. The allergy test area and both sides were entirely clear during allergy testing...the reason for testing was to diagnose the initial breakout on his belly.

No results from the allergy testing? Did they test for ringworm or mange?

Thus reminds me of another Bulldog that is allergic to storage mites

testing gave no surprises...he is allergic to cats. Yes...negative on mange and worms. Over (4) years with a perfect coat...same house yard diet...thanks for the tip on mites.

Poor guy! Nothing else came up on the allergy test at all? That's good but also leaves you completely stumped.

I have no advice but I hope you get your cutie back in better health! That looks awful!

*hugs*

That is so strange that it just appears..... nothing has changed in the household at all? Could there be a feral cat that is coming in your yard at night?

my safari had a similar thing going on, i cant find the pictures but i posted a while ago with pictures. his hair was coming out in clumps all along his back. the vet said it was a staph skin infection and put him on antibiotics. it got worse so i took him back. they still said it was a staph infection and put him on differen antibotics for longer, they also started him on an omega 3 chewy specially designed for dogs. it cleared up and hasnt come back, knock on wood. maybe its something like that?

I'm surprised that the dermatologist didn't even know what it was. Poor baby! I hope it's diagnosed and treated soon.

The only time I experienced something like this is when my BT Uma started to lose hair on both sides of her body. I never got an allergy test done but the first thing I did was change her food to non-poultry and her hair grew back.

I sure hope you find what's going on soon. Poor Barley.

Non poultry diets seem to have been the way to go in many such cases.

We had an EB years ago that lost patches of hair like that after we made a food change. We changed back to his old food and the hair grew back. Ruggles, our current EB, is allergic to a lot of food. We had him tested for food allergies 6 or 7 years ago. Now he eats NVI LTD Ingredient Turkey.

This is a great suggestion. Hudson has poultry issues too. He has horrible itching and chewing when on chicken. We switched him to pork based food and he's doing great now.

This is horrible! I'm so suprised the vets can't figure this out. I sure hope you get it fixed. I would have said the same things that others have mentioned. Mange, food allergies, grass maybe....but all those have been negative. Weird.

My 11 month old puppy is going through the same thing. Just left the vet and he was negative for mites. The spots seems to be getting darker in color and the vet says that it's his fur growing back. They gave me a shampoo to wash him twice a week for a month, and also an omega 3 supplement to support the growth of his coat. The plan is later to also change his flea repellent to something that also handles demodex (mites). The only thing that has changed for my pet is his food. So I'm curious if it's a food allergy. Hate to change his food now because he absolutely loves it. Hope the shampoo and vitamin supplement works. Good Luck.

It could be a low level staph infection, that is why they are giving you the shampoo. You could boost potency of shampoo by adding some colloidal silver to it. Also, boost your dogs immune system by switching to a different food such as the one mentioned before, or a raw dog food or a dehydrated raw dog food ( not chicken ). My dog has been doing great on Only Natural EasyRaw dehydrated raw dog food. Also add a probiotic, preferably a doggie one such as Herbsmith Microflora Plus or Proviable DC, or green tripe, or kefir , or sauerkraut from refrigerator section of health food store. Also give a teaspoonful of coconut oil every day or two, and a tin of canned sardines packed in water weekly.

I swear by the veterinary formula antiseptic and antifungal medicated shampoo. When the skin gets bad wash them 2 times a week then back off to 1 then normal bathing schedule. It has worked wonders for us. Remember to work it into the skin and let it sit for awhile before rinsing. Can be purchased at Chewy.Com
