Quella is scheduled for surgery on Monday. She is still a lil young for spay, however the anticipation of getting the procedure done before she has her 1st heat is mentally getting to me. She is 6 mo 1.5 weeks. Along with her spay, she is having her front dew claws removed, some baby teeth that didn't fall out when the adult teeth came in removed and 2 nipples removed that are inverted and cause her discomfort.

I've tried her inflatable cone and she can get her paw in the neck area then remains stuck and in panic. I'm assuming I'll go back and get the e-collar.

Has anyone's dogs had any of these surgeries? What types of bandages were needed and how long? For teeth extraction, what can they eat or chew on? How can I prevent her from scratching the nipple area with her back paw?

I know our vet will go over all of these on Monday, but the anticipation is killing me as well as not having her supplies bought in advance as well as any treats, toys, etc.

I had Bisou spayed when she was 4 months old. It was required by 6 months for daycare. We also had to have a nipple removed maybe a month or so later because she had allergies and scratched it to the point that it became enlarged. I didn't have to do any bandaging - the vet did it all, and I didn't have to worry about changing anything. I bought a small baby onesie for her to wear while she was recuperating so that she didn't scratch. Worked like a charm and she looked totally adorable. Except for the one time she was wearing it at daycare and they weren't paying attention, so it kind of drooped past her butt and she poohed in it. But even that was adorable.

You'll be fine. Good luck! Just be aware of the fact that her throat will be really raw and ragged from the tube they insert. Some plain frozen Greek yogurt might be nice and soothing for that.

Good luck with her surgery, and hope everything goes well. I don't put the cone of shame on our babies. For the removed nips, you can make a wrap from cloth or a towel and put around her and secure with some safety pins, kind of like the wraps you would put on a male dog. The fun part will be the dew claw bandages, trying to keep them on, we are going through this with two pups also. We had the dew claws removed when they were 4 days old and the vet didn't do them correctly and they grew back, wasn't our regular vet, so now at 7 weeks old we had them removed again. :cursing: So now we are having fun keeping the wraps on their little paws.

I'm definitely not prepared. I'm sure the vet will give suggestions on preventing her from going after each of the wounds. Your idea is great and cheap i.e. free. I was considering buying those diapers for male dogs that is like a women's bandeau top. I'm going to wait until I see the vet on Monday afternoon and even after I bring Q home. All dogs respond differently so until she is here and I can monitor what needs more or less protection, I'll relax.

You guys are all amazing and sit tight, because by Monday afternoon, I'll have tons more questions.

Good luck and our paws are crossed hoping for a fast recovery!

Quella was just dropped off at the vet for her surgeries and an hour later, the vet called to discuss the results of her Pre-Op Blood work. Her Liver Enzyme came back at 230 then retested at 238 range, when the norm is 100 or less. We're doing a Bio or Bile Acids Test and a CBC, Chem and Urin now to see if there is something really wrong with her or maybe it's related to Tox and she got in to Odor & Stain remover on the carpet or possible leftover soap residue in her water dish for example.

The test takes 2 hours then the blood is sent out to another testing facility, so this is going to be a rough few days, pending results.

Calle Roo - We had Olivia spayed right at 6 mos. My husband heard the vet say that it dramatically reduced the chance of mammary cancer if it was done before the first heat and I'm surprised he didnt' leave her that day! She didn't need a cone, but didn't have anything else done at the time. Keep us posted on how she's doing. Does she come home until the lab work is back?

We had Stella spayed right before she turned 7 months old. No cone, only a little vomiting following the anesthesia. Good luck to her and will think good thoughts for you.

Thanks so much for the concern and kind thoughts so far.

She stayed for a few hours because they had to feed her between blood draws. She didn't seem overly excited to see me and is now home, taking a nap. She pee'd when she got home and it was a brownish colour. They did a urine sample, so unless she has blood in it over night, I'll wait for the vet to call me tomorrow per their recommendation.

I moved the guest chair next to my work chair and we're lodged in a lil space where I work... I can't wait to be off of work so I can cuddle her.

Quella's vet called today to discuss her blood results which he also reviewed with a internal medicine doctor. He went over 15+ items and results which left me as a deer in the head lights. He said her liver enzymes are still high and she had something showing in her urine, so he's suspecting UTI. She's being put on 2 antibiotics for the next 2 weeks then we will retest and if things appear better, she can get spayed. Please please please pray that she does not go in to heat before then. I'm not discouraged by the bleeding or stray dogs knocking on my door for a date to Olive Garden but more discerned about the swelling of her cooty coo that never goes away. I did give Q her Heartgard the night before her spay and was hoping that may have had an impact on her liver enzymes due to the Ivermectin but the vet said 'most likely not'. Luckily Q doesn't have any symptoms or side effects that I have to monitor and now it's just a waiting game until the rx's are done and her levels are rechecked.

On a side note, Q was on the couch with me last night and casually looking around when I smelled this funky funk. She expressed her anal glads. I had to disinfect the leather couch and her stinky booty. She's had pretty solid pooty poo so I haven't had the groomer's work them (nor would I allow anyone except the vet) so it was weird that it happened without any distress.

Sorry. I know this is a serious thread, and I know that you're probably freaked as heck right now, but that post made me choke on my lunch (from laughing so hard; plus, it was rice). Cooty coo? Funky funk? Stinky booty? Pooty poo? My vocab just got some additions. Good stuff. Good stuff, indeed.

You're in our thoughts, Quella La Roux! XXXOOO

Fingers crossed she gonna be fine soon.
Maple went into her first heat at the beginning of July.(or maybe it was at the end of June).
Her private parts swell up (which is normal when they go through a heat cycle). However they do get smaller again and back to normal. I dont see a big difference between her private parts before and after the heat. At the same time I dont starr at them lol so they might be a little bit bigger but if thats the case its not even really noticeable.

:)

Now I'm laughing!!!

Poor baby. I hope she recovers quickly. I don't have any experience with any of those surgeries. She's young and should heal quickly.

Quella received two weeks of 2 different antibiotics and recently got her liver enzyme results. Unfortunately they're still elevated. Unfortunately the tests don't specify what is wrong, so there are several 'what ifs'. He spoke of shunt and vessel issues or under development due to birthing issues. I have a few options of treatment and was curious what you would do in our situation...

 • Quella can take supplements and every month have blood work taken to see if it's had any impact on her levels.
 • Quella can have her spay, dew claw and baby teeth removal (the vet thinks she is stable enough to have these done w/elevated levels) and complete a liver biopsy for $200ish and will leave her a 3"+ scar from her spay up to liver.
 • Quella can see a specialist and have ultrasounds and additional tests done for $500-1000.
 • Quella can go to a vet for a 2nd opinion on the blood results as my dad thinks I may have been overcharged for the limited about of diagnosis provided.

Any help is appreciated.

I agree with KimB3384. I would definitely start with getting a 2nd opinion and then taking it from there.
