Hi Folks, My name is Lynne from the UK and I have a wonderful French Bulldog called Bailey (male) who turned 3 yesterday. Unfortunately on Saturday he developed symptoms of Panting, Shivering and was having difficulty with his back legs. I got him to the Vet immediately but, they waiting 24 hours before referring him to the University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital. By that time his hind legs were paralyzed.

He received an MRI Scan which confirmed he had a disc compression and as a result needed immediate surgery (24 hours after I consulted the vet), he was in surgery for 4 hours and is recovering well but is in no pain. Naturally I am devastated, tonight at 9pm he will be 48 hours out of surgery however, his hind legs are still paralyzed and he has not toilet control. the hospital will give him 2 weeks to recover however, they have indicated his chances are 50%. The Vet's are not sounding confident and I am distraught!

Can anyone share their experiences perhaps with similar situations? Having spent the last few days scanning the internet for recovery times and scenarios there is a broad spectrum of outcomes. If after two weeks he has no sensation of toilet habits - the vet suggest perhaps putting him to sleep is an option. We are only in Day 2 of recovery however, I am concerned if 2 weeks is enough time after major surgery to regain sensation.

Your thoughts and experiences on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Lynne

Lynne... so very sorry your baby is going through all this, i have no experience but will send lots of healing thoughts hugs and prayers.

If you are on Facebook there is a group called Bulldogs with special needs-- they are all spinal bifida babies -- maybe someone in the group would have some insight for you

So sorry to hear this, and hope the best for your baby. I would say give it a few weeks and hopefully you will see some improvement in him.

I am so sorry your boy is going through this. I am sending positive vibes for complete healing. 2 days isn't very long after that 4 hour surgery, hopefully all sensations will return within 2 weeks.

Hi Lynne,

I am so sorry. I would be devastated, too. Hopefully in time, Bailey's nerves will begin firing and you will start to see some progress with his back end. Please keep us posted. Prayers for your baby.

I'm so sorry you are going through all of this with your sweet angel. Hoping he will have a full recovery. Sending lots of healing vibes your way!
