About 3 weeks ago safari developed a skin rash on the inside of his hind legs and a spot on his hock. The spot on his hock seems to be loosing hair. And he seems to be shedding a lot more. I figured it had something to do with changing his food so I switched him back but it doesn't seem
To be getting any better. He also has a tiny teeny scab on the inside of his ear and his ears smell. I found a pic online of what the rash looks like. Any ideas? It doesn't seem to be itchy but not sure how he would itch between his legs anyway. Will call the vet today. Thanks!!image.jpg

I would say allergies. Could be food related or environment. Jax had rashes like that but he was very itchy.

If it only gets worse, I'd say get to the veterinarian and they can give him an antibiotic to treat the bacterial infection it's likely causing.

looks like and sounds like food allergies.... what are you currently feeding?

Was feeding natures variety. He was having urinary problems with high ph levels. The vet was 100% against a raw food diet so she told us to feed Nutro or another brand I can't remember. He was fine on
Nutro puppy. I switched to Nutro small breed puppy and the problems started so I switched him back to regular puppy.

Nutro, depending on which, may not be a very good choice. Can you tell me specifically which one? They have a lot of grains in them (rice and such), and the natures variety is a much more premium food. So you are kind if stuck between finding a food that gives a good ph level vs. a low protein high carb food.

Perhaps trying one of the Fromm grain free foods like beef Fritatta would work better?

The allergies kind if look like contact allergies so if you can think of anything chemical or allergen irritating his skin may be in contact with? Laundry soap, floor cleaners, grass, weeds, ect.?

Argh this is the biggest bs! What does the raw diet have to do with the high ph level? Honestly,no wonder your poor baby is showing these reactions. Look at the ingredients. Its almost over 50% carbs!

The best thing to do is switch him back to a raw diet and give him some herbal help for his immune system and bladder. This can all be fixed naturally. No need for drugs or prescribtion diet.

If you have any questions feel free to message me. Stand your ground and if your vet doesnt agree look for a holistic one.

Ok I remembered what food she wanted me to feed him. Royal canin small breed puppy. She has a female frenchie and she said that's what she feeds hers. I have an appt tomorrow evening so I'll see what she says about the food. I may just switch him anyway. I'll also wash all his beds and blankets with organic laundry detergent.
Forgot to say I have him on Nutro puppy in a mint green bag. The problems started whne he was on the small breed puppy in a pink bag.

It may be a yeast problem.
But please, please dont put him on royal canin. Do you really want to feed food that is manufactured by a chocolate bar company? I can only advise you to do some research on the internet.
Please dont get me wrong. I am not upset at you nor can I force you to do anything BUT I get super mad when ,once again, a vet spreads myths about raw feeding and of course recommends THE worst dog food.

If the ears are smelly, it could be yeast which can be caused by allergies. I've read somewhere that potatoes, including sweet, can cause yeast.

Most vets don't really know about great nutrition for bullies or Frenchies, and Royal Canin is not a very good food. We feed ours FROMM grain free food.

I was told the same thing about potatoes...that they can be inflammatory. I spoke to the owner of a pet supply store that is very conscientious about products they sell and she recommended a grain free, potato free food because my daughter's am. bulldog kept having chronic ear infections. The food was Horizon Pulsar fish formula. She has not had a single ear infection since. She does have allergies, but at least the ears are not bothering her.

you can not get any better than raw... if i had the time, it would be my choice. Keep in mind, and I do not mean this in a harsh way, it just is what it is... vets no nothing about nutrition and they just know what they sell in the office. RC and SD are low grade foods and will add to his problems. Some Science diet (SD) foods are great for short term health issues, but not long term. If you are willing and have the time to do raw... go for it, your baby will thrive!

all the smell.odor is most likely yeast and caused by an allergy to something in the kibble... could be the protein or all the grains. Unfortunately, it is trial and erro to find the issue unless you go to a dermatologist for an allergy test

Looked up Fromm on amazon. Their puppy food got great reviews. Maybe I'll switch him to that? Or back to natures variety? I can't decide

Even the best kibble is just that: kibble. Processed food in comparison to wholesome fresh food will always loose in my opinion. Get back to raw and the pup will get better in no time! :)

I will jump in here as well. If the ears smell, it's most likely yeast. I feed my Frenchie Fromm as he has done great on it, plus he devours his food as he loves it. I bathe him with diluted Dreft laundry detergent and have never seen a rash of any kind on him. Hope you get some help from your vet, but they really don't know a whole lot about dog food. Let us know the outcome please.
