Hi all,

I've been searching high and low for some input on this topic, so hopefully someone can help!

Quick history:
We got our little guy at 12 weeks (currently 6 months); he was a bit small (single puppy litter) but aside from that healthy as can be. Our breeder sent us home with Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Puppy. He LOVED the food and no issues were had. Fast forward about a month and he comes down with a mean spell of diarrhea + vomiting. Blood work was done, multiple fecal tests, but to no avail; all clear.

On the vets recommendation we switched him to Hill's I/D (Small bites) along with a regimen of Metronidazole. Vomiting subsides, but the diarrhea remained in full force. After a short period of no improvement, the vet prescribed Tylosin powder. This seemed to do the trick, within a few days stools were back to normal (almost too perfect).

At this point we slowly transitioned him back onto his Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream and everything seemed fine. After a few more weeks his soft stools return; still totally formed, but basically to mush when picked up (and always leaving an unsightly mark on the sidewalk/nightmare on grass) :eek:hmy::eek:hmy:

Anyway, I'm looking for ideas on if this might be somewhat due to a food intolerance (maybe the Salmon)? The vet did mention that it's possible the food is too rich for him??? Nonetheless I think I'll be doing a food change shortly to see if this helps the problem. After my initial search I'm thinking Fromm Heartland Gold Grain-Free Puppy Dry Dog Food might be worth a try? Seems to add a little more fiber & protein. Other thought was possibly to go to a limited ingredient food?

Open to all suggestions!!! Happy to answer any questions if that will help provide any insight!

Current info:
Age: 6 months
Weight: 14.5 pounds
Food: Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Puppy 3x daily - 1/2 cup at each meal. Mainly using Fruitables "Skinny" Treats along with fresh vegetables (carrots, green beans, etc).

TOTW is made by Diamond pet food who've had a lot of recalls. That's a pretty good reason to switch right there. Your dog might also be becoming allergic to fish so might as well switch at this time. You can switch to an all life stages pet food at this time if you want, no need to stay on puppy formula. You may want to try a limited ingredient dog food like one of the Acana singles line ( Duck and apple, or Pork and squash, or Lamb and apples ) . Spot Farms Grain Free Turkey is a lower priced (compared to Honest Kitchen, Grandma Lucy's etc ) dehydrated raw dog food.

It is very possible the food just isn't agreeing with him. I would definitely change to a different brand and maybe even get one that only has one protein versus several. It's easier to figure out a food intolerance when there are limited ingredients. Be sure to do a slow transition over a 7-10 day period to avoid digestive distress. You can also try adding in a table of pure pumpkin (not the pie filling) as that can help firm up the stool.

Also might want to add some fiber to his meals. We use canned pure pumpkin. A good heaping teaspoon with each meal. NOT pumpkin pie mix!!!! Pure pumpkin.

Also forgot to mention that they each get a 2 inch piece of banana mushed up into their breakfast kibble. Well mushed!

Welcome to FBN.

Food switch is a good idea... not Hill's crap either. Acana as someone mentioned is a great food, but you mention the Fromm Heartland Gold Grain-Free Puppy ... I fed this to my guy and he did very well on it.

good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to transition him over to Fromm Heartland Gold and see how he does...I'll be sure to stop back in and let you know all know the results!

Sage advice! Our furbabies Love Fromm! And they love the pumpkin added to it. Plus just enough water to moisten things up a bit.

So we tried a slow transition over to the Fromm on Thursday. 75% TOTW / 25% Fromm. Ate all 3 meals with no problem. By the end of the night stools already looked much better. Fast forward to yesterday - fed breakfast around 7am (75/25 blend). Brought him out for a walk a few hours later and about 10 minutes into walk he starts wrenching - regurgitated what looked to be his entire breakfast undigested. He ate a small lunch (still 75/25) and was fine the rest of the day. Dinner around 6pm; used bathroom normally (solid stool). Around 10pm he popped up from a sound sleep and regurgitated his stomach contents (undigested food). Understand we probably should have fasted him to let his stomach settle. Went back to 100% TOTW for breakfast this morning. Has used bathroom normally and activity level is fine.

Question is, do we assume he may be allergic to the Fromm? Or should we resume transition at a different ratio (90/10, etc) and go for a longer transition. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

What protein is in them? Same or different

Might be too much food since with the Fromm you would feed less... Honeys Owners Cbrugs

Sorry if you've already said this but how much are you feeding per day? It is possible you are feeding too much. Too much food can equal lose stool.

We've been feeding 1/2 cup 3x daily. Trying to ween him off his lunch currently. He's 6 months and weighs 14.5lbs. Is 1 1/2 cup too much?

And you've ruled out parasites?

Jax used to regurgitate undigested food a lot when he was on kibble. Is his bowl elevated? If not, you can try that or a slow feed bowl.

You can cut back on the food a little to see if it helps. And you can add a little pure pumpkin as well.

Yes. 2 fecal exams came back negative. While on the Tylan + I/D food his stools were perfect. The past 2 days have been similar (aside from regurgitation). Back on the TOTW today has been back to the same soft stool. Should I give Fromm one last try at a smaller overall potion? Or move onto something else? Possibly a single meat (duck, etc).

I would say try the slow transition again but at 1 cup of food total for the day.

If that doesn't work, maybe try a different protein.

Also, finding the right food can take a lot of trial and error.

The Fromm Heartland Grain Free Puppy has beef, pork, and lamb, so hard to tell what might be bothering him. Tylosin isn't a really strong antibiotic so he may eventually need to go back on it or hopefully find a really good dog food that suits him. I'd give it one more day then return the bag (since you won't be able to if it's less than 3/4 full) and then try another great brand, Orijen puppy. If that bothers him, try a dehydrated all stages raw dog food like Honest Kitchen Spruce.

Hi all ! I slowed the transition down a ton and we finally have firm stools! Fingers crossed that this continues!
