Morning Furiends!

So Ricos had his BOAS surgery on Thursday. It was done with laser, so he doesnā€™t have any stitches.

Heā€™s on antibiotics (Clavamox) and he no longer seems to be in any pain or discomfort.

But my questions for those of you whoā€™ve had experience with the surgery, more specifically with a laser...

1. He has a lot of clear discharge from his nose, the vet doesnā€™t seem to be concernedā€”and I trust him but was wondering if you experienced this as well?

2. Because of the discharge and of course the lasered tissue his nose is VERY crusty. Do you think itā€™s safe 3 days post op to use a little coconut oil to loosen the crust on his nose, since itā€™s definitely obstructing his newly widened Nares.

I donā€™t know how sensitive the area is, and Iā€™m scared to rub it too hard with a warm towel!

Iā€™d love your input/advice and feedback!

Hereā€™s a photo of his crusty nose!

Hmm... that looks a little green to me? Have you wiped with tissue or napkin to get a good look at the color of discharge?

Yes Iā€™m like a helicopter Dad lol. No color to it at all. I think thatā€™s the lighting. Totally clear.

Although today he has completely stopped the nose bubbling, but has started to drool hahahaha.

My real concern is the super crustiness around his nose, I feel like itā€™s making it more difficult to breathe and Iā€™m nervous Iā€™m going to hurt him if I rub too hard... he isnā€™t into letting me wipe with a warm cloth either!

Good!! Into it or not ya have to clean the area... coconut oil is fine and the warm cloth with help to.

Drooling can be from anxiety or pain--- how is his appetite?

Heā€™s definitely not in pain, heā€™s eating great too!

He gave me a slight scare earlier today. He did one reverse sneeze and I thought I was going to have to call 9-1-1 .... for me. Not him. Lol

It sounds like Rico is getting excellent post-op care! Heal fast handsome boy!

Well, a huge crusty scab just fell off thank goodness. He sounds less like heā€™s a scuba diver now.

So an update!

Last night he threw up, and I went into panic mode, knowing that the biggest complication of this surgery is aspiration pneumonia. Luckily, his breathing is fine and heā€™s not coughing...

So first thing this morning I brought him in to the vet... everything looks fine, they think he is sensitive to the antibiotic, and while itā€™s good to take the antibiotic as extra insurance, the surgery was done with the laser and should have substantially less risk of infection, he isnā€™t infected... so the doctor suggested I stop the antibiotic.

He also is probably with an upset stomach as he is super picky in the way he eats and I was given no choice but to stop the dry food and switch him over to a wet food.

The vet suggested I cook for him, some chicken rice sweet potatoes etc. and so I did.

Right before cooking, I gave him some of his favorite bone broth I make...and he threw it up... it probably was too rich for his empty stomach... but he ate a good portion of my homemade food.

I stopped him on half a bowl to make sure he keeps it down, and Iā€™ll give him the other half in about an hour.

His nose is definitely crusty to no end... he wouldnā€™t let the vet clean it out, he bit the scope and took the qtip out of his hands and tossed it on the floor.... lmao.

So, he suggested I use some saline to get it loosened and he can sneeze the crust out.

Oh these dogs......

"I use some saline to get it loosened and he can sneeze the crust out." this is going to look great when that happens! :barf:

I remember his pickiness when you first got him.... hope he doesn't revert back

I am late chiming in, as usual. (Your little Rico is extra-adorable!!!! :luv:) I would take a warm, very wet but not dripping paper towel and gently put it on his nose - or use your saline but microwave it so that it is comfortably warm - Bambi actually likes a warm cloth and tolerates it no problem. I would keep applying it until you loosen the crusties. After that you can do it often to keep up so that it doesn't build up so much.

Good luck; his nares look beautiful!

Wow sorry you are going through so much post op crusty issues. Jake didn't have any discharge or scabs at all, but he did have stitches inside that dissolved and then another set outside that had to be taken out. Hope he is back to his normal self in no time with his new stylin nose!

I wouldn't touch his nose at all. I had Carrot's nares done and my vet said just to leave the nose. Eventually, it will scab and then the scab will fall off. But, you don't want to force it or it could get infected. That's also the reason the vet suggested we keep the cone of shame on for so long. so, carrot wouldn't try to rub her nose on the carpet. It will get better!!

Vets seem to use antibiotics for a lot longer than we do in humans, so I wouldn't worry about stopping early. Most surgeries in humans are 1 dose antibiotic preop only, although orthopedic surgeries are also for 24 hr postop, and dirty surgeries like ruptured appendix or perforated colon or for abscess are for longer.
