Guys, I am already a pretty paranoid person at times, but holy crud. I was Googling something about Frenchies earlier today and there are THREE different stolen French Bulldog stories at the top of the page in the last 48 hours. I've read others in the recent past, as well. People breaking into homes and stealing nothing but the Frenchie and others are stealing them from pet stores. Does anyone lose sleep over this? I'll be honest, I think about it often.

I am seriously thinking about getting a LINK GPS collar for Daphne. Does anyone have one? Thoughts?

I don't, but we live in a very small, rural county with a low crime rate. Also, our neighbors are great--we all watch out for everyone's pets!

We are lucky to have great neighbors that watch the house, but we never ever let the pups out alone and we have a security system that we USE. it is on at night and when we are not at home.

Ours are never outside alone. At some point I do plan on getting a security system.

My place was broken into a couple of months ago ( crowbarred front door in broad daylight ) and my dog was out on the streets for a while. Luckily someone saw her and called the police who called me, and when I got home she was in a police car. I'm just lucky the burglars didn't hurt her and that she didn't get hit by a car. The thieves stole from me, but luckily didn't want my dog.

Holy crap!!! Thank goodness she was seen

Whaaatttt?! Oh my goodness. Thank goodness your dog was found and ok. I'm sorry your property was stolen. What a violation.

We are living in a rental home until we find something to buy (the market here is BANANAS). Otherwise I would absolutely do a security camera system, and will do so when do buy a house. My two goofballs are always on a leash when outside. We have a fenced yard here but I also never let them out if I can't be out there too. The GPS collar intrigues me, but I guess it would only work in that scenario if the person that stole Daphne kept the collar on!

I don't think GPS collar would be good for theft, since even if robber kept it on, it only works within a limited range.

It's scary that people who robbed my house weren't concerned about ferocious barks from my dog, kind of makes me think they would have used crowbar on dog too if my dog had attacked them.

That is so so horrible. I'm really sorry that happened. Were the criminals caught in your case? Hope so.

Police didn't do any investigation, ie. no dusting for fingerprints, checking neighbours surveillance cam footage etc. But I did read that they busted up a home break in gang in my area. I checked the police website pictures if any of my jewellery or car keys were recovered but didn't see any of my property. These gangs literally break into hundreds of homes in a single neighbourhood before they end up getting caught, or before they move on to a new neighbourhood.

I completely understand your concern.
I am not familiar with the GPS collar and not sure how effective that would be.

One of us is usually always home, but for those times when we
aren't, I installed a video doorbell.
Relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to set up.
We can see and talk to whoever is ringing or moving in front of it.
Great peace of mind.
Good luck!! :)

Sorry to hear that, but glad your baby is ok.
Material tings can be replaced.

Eek. Sorry to keep asking questions about this, but how come no investigation? Is that normal?

Yeah, as soon as we move into a home we own, we are definitely going to do some type of Ring doorbell or CPI security system. Ridiculous.

Yeah it's pretty normal in Toronto. And this is despite my son's passport being stolen, which had to be reported separately to federal government and to the local police station as well. Years ago someone stole my licence plates and put someone else's licence plates on my car, and the police came and just took the licence plates without dusting for any prints. And a place I worked at had footage of thieves swapping out the credit card scanner at the cash register, and police never came to look, although the insurance company did. But, park a foot over the line, accidentally drive a little too fast going down a big hill, and you're sure to get a ticket.

I don't know why this is so surprising to me, but I am shocked!

Hoping you still get your things back even though it unfortunately doesn't seem likely :-(

I did buy such a collar for my niece. They have a Kangal. For those who don’t know (I didn’t), it is a Turkish Mastiff. Hers weighs in at 170 lbs. They live on a farm so the point was locating the dog on the property. It was a nice leather collar that worked with an app for the phone for locating the dog. Unfortunately, they didn’t end up using it. I don’t recall why but it didn’t have anything to do with it not working. Like many others we do not leave our dog unsupervised in the yard and we
do have a security system that we use. Since we live in a mostly rural area I’m more concerned with non-human predators like bears and coyotes, hence never leaving Gracie out alone. Yes, believe it or not, there are coyotes in Maryland. Rare but definitely out there.

We live in the suburbs outside of Atlanta and we have a big problem with coyotes, so I believe you!!!

There are things that I worry about with my Frenchies (mainly allergies and health), but I don't worry about them getting stolen. I think it would overwhelm me if I did. I have a 16 year old daughter who is driving and dating, I can't handle much more worry.

I saw a coyote or maybe it was a fox running in my neighbourhood with a dead rabbit in its mouth 2 weeks ago. We also get huge numbers of raccoons in Toronto, the highest density in North America, and they are smart enough to rip up dogs' bellies with their sharp claws.

Froxermom,
I don't believe you are being paranoid.
When I bought our first little boy, the breeder gave me three great pearls of wisdom as she handed him to me.
He was eight weeks old.
Mind you this was early 2004. Over 14 years ago.
I believe that at that time the frenchie was number 15 in popularity among pure bred dogs ranked by the AKC.
Last year, the frenchie was #4.

1) Beware of pools and other bodies of water. Frenchies and water can be a recipe for disaster..

2) Keep him always in your sight. They are frequently stolen. (also see #1)

3) Discipline him or he will be a horrible little thing to live with!!

We did/have done our best to follow these points.(Except for #3)
It's resulted in him having lots of "character" and a HUGE personality:D.
In spite of our "paranoia" we have still had heartbreak
We can only do so much.

All this having been said, here's the AKC's list of the top 10 most stolen breeds.

By the way, I'm not posting this to cause you more worry:no:, only to create awareness.
We love our little fur babies and want to keep them safe.

In February we drove to the Maryland/D.C. area to pick up Daphne and her former owner indicated a coyote had recently run off with a neighbor's small dog. I cannot imagine the horror.
