Taking frenchies for a run. Is it a good idea?

Hi everyone,

My puppy Lou really enjoys exercising and i take him for walks every time I have a chance.

A couple of times I even took him for an occasional run and he seemed really happy. I don't run marathons or anything like that :) just 15/20 mins of light running, speed at around 8/9km/h (5 mph). I don't take our older bully, Tuni for runs as she doesn't seem to last longer than 2 mins.. her breathing is much worse than lou's and she overheats very quickly. I know her limits very well.

I've heard some vets saying that for bullies running is really unhealthy as if forces their tiny hearts and other internal organs.

However, do you think that as long as Lou seems to really be enjoying it, this could be a problem? I would like to take him more often with me for my 7 a.m. run, (which is also nice and cool) and i was wondering if this is actually good for him or not.

Thanks

Hi Cosmin, because they are brachy, personally I wouldn't run them. Also, they have a high body mass supported by little legs, so however much ground you cover, they do ten times that. I think a walk in cool weather is great. Believe me, this is my opinion only - I have no experience to base this on other than Bambi gets winded by chasing squirrels in our small backyard. Some of the other members who have active lifestyles can weigh in.

Your boy is a doll! :luv:

We did it with Cheli once or twice, but it really took everything out of him and we only went for about a half mile..... a nice walk in the AM is probably all he needs

Are we talking about an actual puppy or fully grown adult?

I take Maple on jogs( 3-5 km) and she loves it. I dont take her every day, but probably around twice a week.
She is a more 'athletic' Frenchie, with a little more snout and longer back, therefore she does not have any issues running & our vet gave his ok after he checked heart, patella etc.

I don't run, but I'd say Dexter will probably cover the equivalent distance at the meet up we go to when he's off the lead! He'll run around for close to an hour sometimes. He's also a small Frenchie, and we've had his knees checked by the vet to make sure he wasn't going to aggravate anything during his madness!

I power walk both dogs in the morning for about 30-40 minutes and Wally does just fine. I don't usually run with them unless we get caught in the rain. I will go running by myself so I can run faster.

Yes, Louie is also sort of athletic. I go for a.m. light jogs either way and I was thinking if this might benefit him in a way as well. Maybe i'll check with my vet as well.

If his heart & knees are fine and he is fully grown, Id see if he enjoys it. My girl loves it. She gets very excited when we put her 'running harness' on. (She usually wears collars).

We are just walkers. I don't feel as if mine are built to run. Stella gets a lot more exercise because she is obsessed with fetch though.

Buster is half French (dad) and half Olde English Bulldogge and he runs himself. He loves it, and loves racing around the field with the neighbor dogs!

Vet gave his ok, said that that as long as he enjoys it it should be fine. I will however watch him closely while we run not to overexert him.

Thanks for your tip.

Great! Bring lots of water. Wally always has to stop for a water break from time to time.

If it's a super hot day out then no.... if it's cooler then sure depending how the individual dog reacts and if they enjoy it and are able to. It really would all depend on the dog. I would maybe do jogging/ walking intervals and not a full on run with mine

Thanks,

This is what i am thinking as well. I only go for light runs in the early a.m. and I would only do this in spring / autumn as hot days are much more demanding. Lou seems to like it as well.

We'll see how this goes
