I took my husband on a 1-week vacation to Vancouver Island to celebrate his 50th birthday, and when we tried to book our regular pet sitter, she was unavailable.

So, we decided to board the two pups at a kennel that was lovely. Open spaces, they're not caged or cooped up all day, it's on a farm, etc. We emailed back and forth while we were gone, the kennel posted pictures on FB, etc. All was well (or so we thought).

The kennel drops both pups off at my house this morning, and within 10 minutes of them being home, I notice that Penelope's right eye is red, it's swollen underneath, and she's squinting. I check the white of her eye and yep...it's red. Wtf?!?!?!? Did nobody notice this???

Thankfully there was a cancellation at my vet's office, so I got there in a 1/2 hr to get her eye checked out, and the vet said that her pupil was constricted, which made her suspect that she had scratched it. But when she put the fluorescent dye in and shone the light on it, it looked like the scrape had healed. (???) Yet, everything else pointed to the fact that it hadn't.

Regardless, we're treating it like she does have a scratch. So, antibiotics and some oral anti-inflammatories to bring the swelling down.

My question is... When did this happen??? Obviously while we were away, but did anyone notice? Obviously not! How long has it been like this? Arrrghhh! The ONE time I put my dogs in a kennel, and this happens! I realize that dogs are rambunctious and anything can happen, but geez... If it isn't an obvious limp or something, does no one seem to check these things? Especially when in the notes I said to keep an eye on Penelope's other eye, just in case another weird eyelash grew back and it would scratch her cornea, etc. I don't know... I'm not blaming the kennel for this happening, I'm just upset that no one noticed. And how on earth did it get swollen underneath? I wonder if it's a doggie version of a black eye? Maybe she got bonked by someone/something?

Sighhhhhhhhhhhh.... Back to stressing out...AGAIN! :( :( :(

Awww...so sorry to hear that :( Poor Penelope. sounds like something has happened during the kennel stay.
Could it be that Penelope had got something from outside stuck under her bottom eyelid and caused the irritation? Let's hope it will clear out soon.

Oh no! Sorry to see that poor Penelope has such bad eye luck!

I'd be upset if I was you too. It seems like maybe if she was playing outside something got into her eye & scratched it & took awhile to get out? I hope nobody at the boarding facility hurt her!

Keep us posted!

Poor Penelope and poor you. It's so hard to leave our little fur babies in the first place. I would be miffed nobody noticed it either. Could have happened anywhere, but they still should have brought it to your attention.

It sounds like it was from playing but I can't believe no one noticed!

I hope she will heal up soon. Poor pup.

Update: Her eye is already much better! The swelling has gone down, and it's less red inside. I'm actually kind of surprised how quickly it's getting better. (Not that I'm complaining!) Who knows what caused this. I'm just glad she's on the mend! :D

Good grief, poor girl. Hope she heals fast.

So glad she is doing better. Terrible thing to come home to. Is her other eye all healed now?

Poor girl. Have you tried asking the kennel these questions?

This happened to Hudson when he was boarded the first time. I noticed it as I was picking him up. The boarding place called the local bulldog specialist, got us in (it was a Sunday) and paid for everything, including emergency fees. H was just fine after some healing. I was annoyed that nobody noticed, but they really did right by us in the aftermath. They even called every couple days to check in on him. If I were you, I might go to the kennel and ask for some answers!

I hope P is feeling better!!

I know, I should really tell the kennel, as there's no question that it did happen while she was there. I even gave them drops *just in case* she did get a scratch. Argh!
