Recently, when I've given a yak chew to Carrot she's started to guard the yak chew and will growl and snap at anyone who tries to take it away. But unlike before when she would actually chew and enjoy a chew, she now won't even chew on it. She just guards it or holds it in her mouth. Not sure where this behavior came form or how to break it. I think she knows I will eventually take it away as I only let her chew on the yak cheese for about 30 mins at a time.

She is resource guarding, which can be very difficult to break... do not let her continue the behavior. What i do it take the item and place it where she can see it but not get... wait for a period of time and give a command if she obeys she gets it if not, it stays on counter. Use 'nothing in life is free'. To get her to know you are boss

Also, never let them see you throw it away... they know (not sure how) but they know the difference of it not returning

Is it bad that we sometimes distract her and then take it away when she's not looking?

Possible.... make sure she can see it wherever you place it

Agree with 2bullymama. My Stella resource guards and it can be challenging. The more that you can show that you are the leader and in control of everything in life will help. Stella will want to play fetch obsessively, so before I throw the ball she must sit. If she brings it back and starts to bark, the ball goes on the counter and the game is over. Teaching the leave it command may help too.

Exactly what Christine said! These Frenchies have amazing memories; in a similar situation Buster would sit for hours and watch the toy on the counter!
