Are nylabones dangerous?

Hi everyone! I've been giving my 7 month old frenchie nylabones since I brought him home and he really seems to love them, but I noticed recently that he was chewing tiny parts of the bone off and swallowing them which I assumed is not okay. I decided to read some reviews and found that there have been lots of lawsuits where dogs have cracked teeth or swallowed tiny pieces of plastic from nylabones which resulted in digestive blockages and even death. Does anyone have any good/safe alternatives for non-edible bones?

I have used nylabones for over 14 yrs.... never, not one issue with all four of our dogs during that time.

I run them through the dishwasher to clean them and dremel off pieces when necessary. however, y guys favorite of all toys/bones are moose antlers and raw marrow bones

For those dogs that chew on antlers, do your dogs just chew on it or do they actually eat it? Cause I used to get Jax antlers but he was eating them. They would start out regular size and then get smaller and smaller. I wasn't sure if that's the purpose so I stopped giving them to him. Jax does chew on Nylabones and horns, always while being supervised.

Nylabones and antlers can cause cracked teeth according to my vet. Instructions from the organization that I am raising a service puppy for also prohibits that we give them hard plastic bones or antlers. For the service puppy in training, I rub a finger full of cream cheese on a kong which she enjoys. Or you could try some hard rubber toys that you can hide treats/kibble in to keep her busy.

We use nylabones, just square them up when Buster chews them to a point and get rid of then when they get too short. Our vet doesn't approve of antlers because he has removed too many antler chards that were causing problems.

We have used Nylabones for a long time and have never had problems. As others have said, when they get rough on the ends, we Dremil them smooth. We also use Moose and Elk antlers. Hard rubber Kongs are another excellent choice.

Update! I gave my dogs Benebones (hard chew) for Christmas and they loved them. I was brushing Jake's teeth this morning and his back molar seemed loose so I took him to the vet and it was a slab fracture:( I guess we are going back to stuffing a Kong with some canned food and putting it in the freezer.

I used to use nylabones and antlers. But after over $2,000 in dental procedures for cracked/loose teeth, no more.

Oh wow...... Dexter is a big chewer, and I give him nylabones, antlers and Himalayan cheese sticks. Now I'm worried....

Same here. My dogs don't care for antlers so I stopped buying them. They don't care for their Kongs, they never have played with them at all. I have to be careful with Himalayan chews too because they chew so fast and hard they go through them very quickly, and Uma has gained some weight. Now I'm stumped as to what to give them to chew on without worrying about their health. I'll continue to research.

We use antlers and have had no issues. Two Frenchies and a maltipoo, they all take turns chewing on them. I guess they are not big /hard chewers because although they have gotten smaller, they last forever!

Exactly the same here - won't touch anything Kong related, has some interest in antlers but will eat them, and he'd finish a cheese stick in an hour no problem if I let him. I've tried actual raw bone, but he was consuming too much to fast and would be sick.

I have no idea what to give him now! He's a big chewer too.....

He's definitely Wally's twin when it comes to chewing! Wally was sick on a raw bone as well. It's like he's in a race when he's chewing something. I will let you know if I find anything good for heavy chewers.

Yip - exactly the same! Dexter prefers to chew than play with toys. Give him a toy, he chews it. I'll also report back if I can find anything of interest!

I buy a lot of braided rope toys. Titan chews them forever and never damages or rips up the rope, just chews and chews. And I give antlers in moderation.

I was thinking of getting a seriously tough bit of rope and giving him that, but I'm worried it might be treated with chemicals. If I give him a rope toy, he works and works on either the knot or the frayed ends and pulls it to bits. He's a menace!!

Wash the ropes first? I've even washed dog toys before giving them to the dogs because they smell like they were stored around chemicals. Like Walmart/dollar store I don't know how they store their toys etc prior to shelving... so I just take precaution lol.

Quite right - you don't know where these things are made, or how long they've been sitting around for. Better to be safe!
