Today is Remy's 11th birthday!
Just a month ago, I didn't think he'd make it to celebrate it.
We had a followup visit with his internist this morning, with chest xrays to check on his lungs following his near-fatal bout of aspiration pneumonia. The xrays showed his lungs are looking good! Dr. B did a quick sonogram of his stomach; the stomach lining lesion is still present. She came out to the waiting room and asked if I'd like to have her attempt another sonogram-guided needle aspiration of the lesion at no charge, as it could not be reached last time we tried (it is in a somewhat inaccessible spot). Of course I agreed, and after a while she came back out and told me that she did NOT see any cancer cells in the first smear but may still send them off for lab testing.
This is not 100% definitive that Remy does not have cancer, but it is very reassuring to me nonetheless. Remy has been doing very well lately. His energy level is back to par, much decreased drooling, and his appetite is about 80%, although he is being handfed small meals of chicken, rice, and canned dog food 4 times daily.
I personally don't think he has cancer. I am researching cancer diets and supplements, and Dr B says it can't hurt to try them. I am going to hold off on steroid therapy, as Remy is doing so well. We will reconsider it if he starts to decline.
So, although he doesn't know it, today's vet visit brought the best birthday present that Remy could ask for. I'm sure Remy is thinking, "Meh.... where's my treats?"
